4 months of exploring...gone

sorry for your loss. really.

i have been in a similar situation. after a while i understood: it is about the experience you made, not about rank or credits.

took some weeks, and went back out into the black.

fly safe, cmdr!

I was out exploring the galaxy...for the last four months. I get back to civilized space, am going in to dock...something screwy happened, a ship bumped into me, I slammed into the station and boom. All my data lost... I want to cry. [cry]

If it was a glitch, then I would suggest making a ticket and talking to frontier about it. I know from personal experience that if there has been a problem with the actual game mechanic, or game glitch, they can often restore anything you have lost. Cant hurt to ask. But if it was pilot error, then I am afraid your just going to have to take it as a learning experience and try and move on.. not easy I know.

I wish I could say it was a glitch...it was my stupidity and excitement of selling the tons and tons of data I had....if I figured it out correctly, I had close to a billion or more credits. Poof...gone. It was a good reminder to me of how unforgiving this game can be to the foolish.

Thats why I always.. ALWAYS suggest flying with a shield. especially if your coming back with that much data... I know its just added weight for no reason. but a shield can be that one time buffer that saves EVERYTHING. just get a low class A rated or even biweave..

But I feel your pain. When I was first starting out, I made some stupid mistakes, and paid the ultimate price... Elite Dangerous is one unforgiving galaxy.

I really like the unforgiving nature of the game. It makes it so much different then most games where you can reload a save file or easily recover from your mistake. I was reading online about getting rid of the shield and took the suggestion. Never again will I take that advice. Live and learn I guess. At least my escape pod worked. :D

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but you got to put a shield in your kite and run the docking training scenario before you get into the bubble.
It's way to easy to get "bubble rusty" if you're out a long time.

Take a break then go out again, good luck.

I know how it feels. I lost a month and a half's worth of data once to a player wing of two vultures and a clipper. Wasn't pretty, but in retrospect I was overconfident and not paying as much attention to the radar as I should have been. I was angry, bitter, and sad, but after a few days of contemplation I realized that I wasn't so bad off. I easily afforded the insurance for my Asp, and I did have fun out in the deep exploring. I lost a lot of credits and first discover tags, but eh, at least I learned to be more careful.

I always return in solo mode now though, just to be extra careful. :D

So you are sure it wasn't "scramming"? That's when you are scanned by an authority vessel and it rams into you. It's a real problem, happens to me a lot but I'm always shielded. If it was that, might not hurt to do a ticket, might be surprised? It's just such a shame.. You are taking it significantly better than I would :)

Santro says they are looking at that in one of the live streams.

Maybe describe exactly what happened..

I was overconfident, wasn't being scanned, there were alot of ships going in and out of the docking port....I said the heck it, went in, paid more attention to my cat next to me then the computer (I had a docking computer) and got bumped...one thing lead to another and boom. It was my own stupidity. I am taking it well, because it happened and I cannot change it. Even though I would like to. I will just move on and learn from my failures... Though don't think I am not beating myself as we speak.

That sucks. I just got back from a month long exploration and was contemplating this very thing as I came in to dock, since I hadn't done it for a month. Maybe I'll keep those "unnecessary" A rated shields on my DBX after all. Rep added.

Sorry for the loss! My first trip out into the black, I was gone only a few weeks, but I scanned over 1100 systems. I got back to the Bubble and was going through the slot when I get bumped by another ship coming out the wrong side. Neither one of use died, but I got pretty banged up (I didn't have a shield at the time.) I get in and land, get fined, fix my ship and then sell all the data. Scared me enough that I took shields with me on this trip. There is no way I'm going to lose more than 6 months of data to something like that!

Ouch [knocked out].

At the moment I cannot fully understand your pain, as I have not lost any data this way yet. I do however build up a fear for an event like this slowly, as I'm out there without shields. It is exactly your situation that I'm contemplating more and more each day; if when I go out again I will be better equiped :).

Repped for having the courage to post it and take the consequences, not for loosing your data

I would still write a ticket, you have nothing to lose, the worst they will say is "sorry cant help you". Just be honest and tell them you screwed up. They might take pity on you as 4 months is a lot to lose. I think many people in your situation would simply quit playing the game. I really feel for you, I just got back from exploration myself and cant imagine how bad it would hurt to lose it all to a silly accident. I think I would cry too..

I give you props and +rep for taking it like a champ and not complaining, but seriously take my advice and see if FD will do something for you.

That's harsh and a good lesson for all those budding explorers I also think it's one of the reasons I'm whizzing around the bubble exploring first then I'm going to go further afield. I have found one system which had two dwarf stars in a close binary formation and tbh that was a hair raising experience for me as I'm in a Sidey but on the whole it's nice :)

Sorry to say but you ran across some terrible advice. Going without a shield was a bad idea before Horizons came out. After Horizons, if you intend to land, going without a shield is an even worse idea. Sorry for your loss, though if it makes you feel better I kinda doubt it was a billion credits worth. Let's just assume you miscalculated and the loss will burn less :)

Sorry for your loss, you have my sympathy. We all learn by our mistakes, so as Newman has stated, shields are essential.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss CMDR. I cannot imagine your feelings on this, been out since January myself.
Again CMDR very very sorry to hear that.

Again: sympathies, but as above... I did almost 5 months out of the bubble including BP and back while looping through the Neutron fields and made 129MCr which is nothing near your expected 1BCr, so perhaps the monetary impact was not *as* severe as you thought.

Makes my blood run cold as I'm on my way in after leaving back end of December. I think this is when exploring can be at its most cruel. (I can think of time in other "professions" that you could lose a lot - but that involves being stupid.)

My first stop in the past has been a remote outpost - it helps landing on an outside pad with no traffic to get your "eye in". This time I might use some Jumponium, to lessen the risk of being attacked, to get where I want to sell my data.
