Certainly not the same as losing 4 months worth of data, which I would be very distraught over, but I think a lot of us have had similar moments where a "Special" key is inadvertently pressed and it all goes to rat !

I've been six weeks out and my ship is suffering some major subsystem damage - today I almost got myself killed miscalculating a flyby between a star and a gas giant that was ludicrously close to it (beautiful pics).
But at least in my case these mistakes have been gradual over time and I stand a good chance of making it back still (if I'm careful). To lose your ship in a single moment like that? Ugh.

4 months of exploration?
wow....ow...don't know what to say, other then it sounds like you used ctrl+alt+del rather then alt+tab and hit del key, silent running can be turned off in functions on right screen as well, just fyi since I gather you are flying with joystick and din't know keybinds.

ED is a cruel, cruel game. I'm just going to unbind silent running. I don't need it for exploring.
The option is about half way down the Options -> Control under Flight Throttle.
Personally, I like binding `, 1, 2, 3, 4 to the Power Levels 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and then moving the existing 1 - 4 to the Function keys.

^^ I know, I am using my own key bindings. Thing is that 'tab' is boost and 'left alt' is not being used at all, so I have no clue where that 75% throttle comes from when I switch the tabs. While I am in supercruise, 'tab' does nothing (as expected), neither does the 'left alt'. But when I alt-tab... throttle immediately jumps to fixed 75%.

I found myself hurtling sunward by doing the same thing recently. What made me panic even more was that I had to click the ED screen with my mouse before the game would react to my HOTAS.
That was a scary moment, I can tell ya.

I feel for you. I don't know how I'd react if I died as a result of something like this.
I suspect that I'd put the game down for quite a while and not come back until there was more to discover for the would be explorer.
Although, sadly, I'm kind of beginning to feel like this anyway, (and I hate myself for it).
I'm sitting here and just repeating "Oh my God" over and over. I have unbound that blasted key from everything, and will probably never use it. In fact I'm going to pop back and make absolutely sure I didn't map it when setting up the X55.
