40 Dinosaurs at release confirmed: What do you think?

So from the translated German Article, we know that there are going to be 40 dinosaurs on release. What do you think about it?

As for me, I'm okay with it. It's not as high as I was expecting, but it's a solid number. I think we can get a good amount of diversity in. Given that there are 25 dinosaurs in the film-canon, and we know that Chasmosaurus, Deinonychus and Struthiomimus are in game, that leaves 12 more dinosaurs that we don't know. I'm excited to find out more about them. We might even in the next 24 hours! Plus, there WILL be DLC and mods that add more species.

So, yeah. What are your opinions everyone?

I really wanted more, this is a bit underwhelming but I'm excited. It's a solid number as you said but it doesn't seem like enough. Hopefully DLC will change that.

I was under the impression that we would be getting 50. But 40 is still pretty good. I never expected them to cram every obscure Dinosaur they could find into the game.

According to Wikipedia, there are some 54 dinosaur species across the films and books (including ones that are merely mentioned or shown on a map or something). Honestly, missing only 14 dinosaurs is not that bad, especially considering the apparently complex AI behaviour.

Considering how good they look (and move and everything), I think 40 is very solid number for a start. Definitely better than 60 crap ones. :D
I think 40 is enough for some nicely populated mixed herbivore ranges (which is my main focus) and we don't need too many carnivores to make our parks... ehm... interesting.

40 is what JPOG was supposed to have then it got lowered to 25. So it seems like they went for the original JPOG number to me. Cause I doubt they randomly chose to have 40 Dinosaurs. They could have just given us the ones that were featured in the movie and called it a day. But they still went far beyond that. I don't know why I thought 50. I believe I heard it in the interview with Nick Rodgers and TheGamingBeaver. I will watch it again. But it's only 10 less than 50 and still way more than JPOG's 25. So it's still pretty good. People who get all upset over getting 40 should really keep things in perspective.

That's not too bad, but if they include every dino seen in the films, plus some of the ones mentioned but not seen, it doesn't leave much wiggle room.

Hopefully they all have a fun variety of visual variation!

I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping for 50, thought that would give alot of variety. 40 is a little low, especially with alot confirmed or, extremely likely (Spinosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus for example)

Doesn't leave many surprises.

Plus that seems most dig sites are just one animal so some major dinosaurs will be left out.

We'll probably get Suchomimus but that means Ouranosaurus more than likely won't make the cut.

That would be 2 per dig site. 20 sites. Also don't forget about DLC possibilities.

I thought 29 sites were confirmed.

Well there is 40 Dinosaurs. So maybe it's not 2 Dinosaurs per site. Dividing 40 by 29 gives me 1.3. How they will split 40 Dinosaurs into 29 dig sites is beyond me. Maybe some dig sites will have more Dinosaurs?

Guys, stop complaining about dinosaurs count! My God, we will have 40 DINOS! It is a big amount, right? Maybe we will be able to get more by DLC's so for now this number is satisfactory. :D

I'd expect so. Morrison Formation in US has like 10 of the confirmed dinosaurs so will probably have more than one. Same with He'll Creek.

I would say 40 is plenty, but it depends on what variety there is within species. If they have different attributes tied to the research portion of the game, that 40 ought to provide a lot of variation in gameplay.

The way I look at it...... in the REAL world, if one dinosaur was discovered i would be ecstatic... two dinosaurs....id be over the moon. 40 dinosaurs in this game? thats pretty darn cool if you ask me XD

40 is a large amount, more than enough. I think Frontier will add additional dinos with DLC post-release. I'm disappointed that there's no option to breed male dinosaurs yet. I made a thread about that:

The game is beautiful and exciting. However, it's disappointing that there's only female dinosaurs. There should be an option to incubate male dinosaurs as well. Because it expands the possibilities to create the dinosaurs of our dreams. These could be sterile so there's no unchecked breeding.

This is easy to implement, because Frontier could use the same models for male dinosaurs, make them a bit bigger and add gender info. If this can't be added to the base game, then make it a DLC.

Male dinosaurs do exist in the Jurassic Park lore:

"In the movie and novel, the geneticists turned off the genes that allowed the dinosaurs to produce the hormones to become a male. All vertebrate embryos start off with female genitalia, and given the right hormones, the offspring will become male. The geneticists, in the movie and novel, turn off these genes for safety purposes, but in Jurassic Park 2 on Isla Sorna, both males and females exist for breeding. The product of these breedings are eggs, and the eggs are possibly taken back to Site A, Isla Nublar, where the embryos are denied the ability to become male. However, in the movie and novel, the genes of frogs were used to fill in the gaps in the dinosaur genetic code. They mutate, and the dinosaurs become sequential hermaphrodites, like the frogs, and can switch genders from female to male or female to hermaprodite so that they can fertilize their own eggs with their own sperm."
