400 Billion Star Systems - What will it feel like?

With such a large planned gaming area and a comparatively small number of players, my concern is that 99% of it could feel barren and empty.

What is planned to make it feel alive and interesting from the core to the very edge?

Will it all be populated with stations outposts and npc's? Will there be Alien civilizations with their own commodities and ships?

One thing I would like to see is the ability to find easter eggs in the form of long before launched ships, probes, satellites like the Voyager craft.

I am sure that people will not be evenly distributed. In the far frontier you will be very lonely, yes, and that is a good thing, is it not?
There is only a few thousand populated systems, and even fewer of them are important populated systems.

In the final game there will be other starting locations. Also we will not have access to the entire Milky Way. It has been confirmed numerous times that certain areas will be closed off for future expansions.

and this is just the very tiny part of the truth... ed limits to OUR galaxy only... imagine that the universe is, well, mindboggling greater than just our 'little' tiny galaxy... and what if, the theory 'bout multivers seems true, a day?!

You can almost think of it as two distinct game areas.
There is colonised space, where there will be things going on. Traffic in and out of stations, trade, piracy, missions. Even local politics with neighbouring systems and all the rest of it. This will be a very large, but not completely off the scale, game universe by the standards of other games. It will be big enough that you're still unlikely to encounter many players in places off the beaten track - but there are will be hotspots with a good deal of player traffic. This region is the realm of combat pilots, traders, pirates, passenger liners and in the end, most other people.

In addition to that, there is unexplored space, which is practically endless. Here you're very unlikely to encounter other players unless it's intentional. There won' be any infrastructure, missions, trade to be done or traders to prey on. This is the realm of explorers. Those looking for a lot of player interaction have no reason to come here. It's for those who want to see what's out there, to find rare sight and visit places nobody has ever been before. Perhaps strike it rich with a rare find, but more likely just soak up the majesty of the galaxy.

Many will find that boring. For them, there is human space - which is still much bigger than most entire games.

Not everywhere has to be populated and packed with 'stuff'. Go to the North Pole and tell me what you see? The universe is insanely freeking big, it wouldn't even be remotely realistic you will find things anywhere you go, thats a fact of reality (even in a 'game')

With so much uncharted space, it'd be a snap for the Devs to parachute in an alien race or two. If you had a small play area, they'd be limited to 4 or 5 planets but with E:D, you could make 1,000 worlds as "populated" by a previously undiscovered race. *happy*

In addition, it does open the possibility for "Explorer" to be a career path...

How much distance can an explorer ship travel though? I imagine it will run out of supplies at some point and become stranded. It would be cool if people could build stations in explored space that would allow for further exploring. Some island hopping, if you will.

Teen spirit? No that was smells like wasn't it.....:p

It's going to be mind -bogglingly massive, unbelievably big, so big I can't even start to imagine what it will be like! You could set off in your ship and never see another sole it's so big.

Look on the bright sight, we will never see all of them. Not in our life time!!

Except for those that live in very small towns... I bet most of us have not driven down every street in our town.

Why wouldn't space be like that.

I think it will pretty much feel the same way it feels now. Tiny. Being in one of the outer systems and not seeing another player (in open play) is very lonely indeed. It's epic, truly epic.
