40k bounty - is that normal?

I've recently started bounty hunting in a tricked out Eagle, and I'm surprised at how high some of the bounties are. I'd been given to thinking that it didn't pay well, but I'm regularly netting 8-9k on wanted cobras and vipers, and have twice taken out ships with bounties of over 40k (a python and a dropship).
Of course sometimes I net a few hundred which doesn't even cover the multi-cannon ammo, but these big scores are really makling up for it.
Is this normal?
I'm very pleasantly surprised...

Balancing must be the hardest part for FD. I am now advancing in a Cobra MK 3 since yesterday, making far more money per hour, and I noticed how my goals gradually changed since I started this avatar commander a few weeks ago. Hunting lost cargo/rare things has become less profitable, mining became more profitable, trading is now really profitable. It's easier to cover large distances, which extended my scoop. I find myself comfortable plotting larger travels through space and I already recognize neighborhoods, know sweet spots/interesting systems. :D I also understand the security system better, gut feeling where interdictions from feds and/or pirates are more likely.

Haven't touched battles yet, apart from a couple of weak pirates I could shot with basic weapons. Don't know if bounties are too high, as you advance money becomes less important. It's becomes more about your influence and reputation, what side you chose. But if you're fine you can just continue trading/mining/bounty hunt/explore. I am working towards a top "mother ship" to fall back to + enough money to replace anything, and secondary ships for specific goals like one with a max jump range.

Already spent hours in this game, not a dull moment. Marvelous game.

Yep, My record is, I think, something under 90k for a Clipper. I've seen Anacondas with more, but they scare me. :D

Hunting Anacondas is kinda odd. Most of them really aren't that bad, they just take a long time to kill.

And then you meet an Elite one.

Watch out for that plasma accelerator, it's a doozy...

160,000 for a 'dangerous' anaconda yesterday (my 100th Kill) It nearly cost me my Cobra. 3-8000 is normal but 15,000 sometimes

I had to abandon a disabled Anaconda worth 110k in bounties because I ran out of damn shield cells, my hull was at 46% and the thing was spewing laser fire like an angry crippled space beast whenever I got close from any angle.

I hope the pilot froze to death. A-hole. All I wanted was his head on a stick.

They seriously need to buff the BB hunt down missions, because in comparison they gave way too little credits and cost way more time than random bounty hunting. On the flip-side those wield rep, while random hunting doesn't.

try getting an anaconda or python and replacing it if it dies then say that its easy to make credits. It's easy to make credits to maintain up to a cobra or so, but the bigger ships, are a real fear to fly with how slow it is to make millions.

Bigger ships are not for random cruising around, looking for trouble. The bigger the ship, more "captain-ish" you need to be, as opposed to space hotshot when flying smaller ships.

so... You can't just bounty hunt with an asp or clipper or python that easy because of fear to lose your ship?
Don't these ships have enought cargo capacity to earn a living?

A lot of money can be made by bounty hunting...I just posted this in another thread:

Even Anaconda's are no challenge...

Scored 132,000 from random Conda at Nav Beacon last night. Was a surprise. Personal best apart from the pirate lord hunter missions.
Would be cool if the higher bounties put up more of a fight. They should have skills to be wanted for so long.
