I think you will have more success if you ask 1 cr in the game
I was actually thinking about that last night. I can't imagine only getting the newsletter and dev diaries.
I expect many will be reading the forums too, but not posting.
I can't keep my mouth shut, so that approach was out for me.

I wonder how many will be actually regularly playing the game, it amazes me when you look at the Steam stats how few people play some of the games compared to how many must own them. Its probably in the order of 1% or something. So we will probably have 400 people playing this game based on that number of backers, just have to hope lots and lots of people buy the game when it gets released!

The Forum members list shows 6,635 members. Of those some will be uninterested in Elite (here for support on other games, say Kinectimals or Lostwinds or whatever). Some will be old dead accounts created to post one question about a game.
Then there will be the bakers who never registered here, just drop in to read from time to time.
So to answer the word "participate" it's quite low - 10-15%.
"Read" cannot be answered at all without access to the website's metrics.
Frontier has already sold of the games at 10 million of copies. If it is the same for ED, then we would have between 100 000 and 200 000 regular players ?
@Nats - I think the 1% is typical of game playing as a whole.
How many games do most of us buy that we actually play for very short periods of time. I had 5 for Christmas, one I finished in two days, three I only played for a few hours each and the other I have played regularly.
I remember having loads of games for the Spectrum but there were only a few like Elite I played for more than a few days.
