4K displays

So simple question will the next gen GPUs be able to handle 4K VR and how long do you think till we get 4K?

If the new GPUs are good enough, I'm hoping within 18 months

Display upgrade ought to be a simple hardware hack - and I have nothing today, so will be happy if upgrades are feasible in 12 months.

4k at 90fps stereoscopic rendering not even Pascal and Polaris will pull that off..in 5 to 10 years probably but not for GEN2...gen4 maybe

Hope harder... I think it'll be significantly longer than that. 4K per eye is 8K total, at what, 90fps? Yikes.

Certainly doable, but I imagine that'll be, yeah, Gen 3 to 5... possibly 5 years away.

Presumably eye tracking, and only rendering what the person is looking at in the most detail, can also help here - so we won't have to render the whole display at that resolution. I'm pretty sure VR research will be looking into this already.

Let me turn that around and ask you for how long oculus home will support the DK2?

According to their own web site - it is not supported today as a consumer product but will continue to work this year: "DK2 will continue to be supported as a development platform in 2016".

As others have said it's not the hardware its the rendering horsepower. Fovean rendering techniques with eye tracking and pascal GPUs will hopefully make a bump in resolution viable within 2-3 years.
