4k headset anyone heared of this Pimax?

I like using my HMD with ED despite the downsides of VR. But whatever HMD you choose, the bottom line is that HMD's are still first gen. Second gen, who knows? But hopefully we'll have cheap 4k graphics cards, improved SLI and better HMD resolution and tracking. Until then, I'll just make do :)

Hello Guys!
Just wanted to share that I have recently bought this Pimax 4k VR. While it is not "true" 4k, it is still really good vr headset especially for it's price.
If you have any questions - feel free to ask.
I'm currently messing with settings to achieve best image quality/smoothness ratio and trying to figure out which supersampling to use - Elite's in game one, SteamVR's supersampling or some kind of side app. Any suggestions?
My rig - Geforce gtx 1060 6gb, 8gb ram, i5-4570 3.20 Hz

Sounds great @arhiDavid - best thing you can do is play with it a while and post your thoughts and experience here so others can see what you thought of the PiMax 4K headset.

I love the idea of the higher resolution - a lot of us are waiting for clearer images for sure. But its a big hit to performance. Your insight, as an owner will be invaluable.

Let us know how you go with your headset! [up]

I have the Pimax 4K and Vive. A few things of note (YMMV):

1) The Pimax's black levels are considerably "raised" in comparison to the Vive. Gamma etc. dont help this as its a facet of the LCD panel. This affects perception of depth = Vive wins

2) The Pimax has issues with gyro drift. At worst you have to recenter the headset every 10 seconds (when in open play with wing). Other times, it can be every few minutes. Can be a pain when in combat. Vive wins (for now). Pimax 4K needs an external tracker such as NoloVR (not yet released). I've tried using an ED Tracker, but ED doesnt allow headlook mode when in VR (obviously), so this doesn't work (even if you turn the Pimax's gyro off.) For me, that one issue breaks immersion terribly, as I mainly bounty hunt.

3) The Pimax software needs a lot of work. It is quite buggy; still has resolution and format issues, and can require the planets to align before detecting the headset.
4) Comfort. While the Vive is no comfort king, it is easier to wear for longer periods than the Pimax. That issue is mainly caused by the sharp edge to the nose section of the Pimax. Using some foam tape helps somewhat.

4) The Pimax's resolution is clearly superior to the Vive.

5) The Vive is a bit of a annoyance with ED due to the use of fresnel lenses. The joints in the lenses tend to create halo effects to bright areas of the image. An issue that ED developers could help by reducing the brightness of the armchair lighting panels. While the Pimax lenses aren't great (small sweet spot), they dont suffer from the fresnel effects. Pimax wins there.

There are other things, too, but these are the main ones for me. FWIW, I've put the Pimax to one side and likely wont use it again until I have a good solution for tracking.

HTH!

to add to the above post don't forget the door effect which Pimax doesn't really have. the drift is my biggest complaint as well. it's very random like you outlined and the more you move your head around to extreme the worse it seems to get... as for the best settings for ED there's another excellent post or two on this if you search which explains best config in detail...

I am playing with a pimax 4k now. Honestly it's night and day when playing the game. I've demo'd the vive in stores and it just can't compare.

The drift I don't love, I have the recenter button bound and use it regularly. However, if the situation is tight you can always change your orientation a bit until you get a chance to hit it. It seldom goes off for me more than a few degrees and only when I'm turning far left or right.

I'll play ED in desktop mode when working, but any chance I get i'd play in vr mode first and by a long shot.

Just out of curiousity, would you say the Pimax would be better for media consumption, imax style 3D films, etc or is the drift still bad?

The drift is minimal at worst. Last night I had to play without my re-center key on my joystick and it was at most a minor inconvenience. For standard media, it's a fixed screen so you don't even have to worry about drift. The pimax screen quality is better, hands down, than the rift or vive.

I've got one of these on order, £250 from aliexpress. It's just been shipped so I'm hoping it turns up sometime in the next couple of weeks. I understand the limitations, but for the price and much higher resolution it seems like a good deal. Never used VR before so I thought I'd take a punt anyway.

make sure to download v1.1.92 it's the best.

I've heard of some people having to re-center it every 15 mins for movies. For Elite Dangerous, in a res or CZ, you're looking at re-centering every 10-20 seconds - horrific.

True, I've heard that too but some of the reviews on youtube elsewhere seem to suggest it doesnt. Maybe it varies from headset to headset. It would be good if its a problem for tue software to have an autocentre facility like ED trackers did. Not ideal but would make it bearable
