4k Monitor suggestions for Elite and other AAA games.

Hey folks, planning to pull the trigger on a new desktop rig in early January and was looking for some suggestions as to a suitable 4k 144hz monitor to pair with my system.
The system will likely be built around an i7-13700k and the 4080 (yeah I know, not the most 'value' proposition, but I do want the the RT and DLSS 3.0 performance from the 4080, although the 7900 xtx is not bad either.)

Currently considering the Gigabyte M32U (though I have heard its GSync stability can be patchy, also IPS as well) or the Dell 32 G3223Q (IPS may not be the best for playing space sim games due to ability to display deep blacks)

My max budget is £800

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the above linked monitors or could suggest one that they have had a good experience with.

Many thanks in advance!

ED must look awesome on OLED screen. I personally wait for some not-crazy-expensive OLED 4k 27-28".

Alternatively, if you don't play fast competitive games, you may consider VA screens.

As you note, the relativly low contrast ratio if the IPS screeens will hurt games with a lot of dark scenes, like Elite, more than they would others. Between the two IPS panels, I'd probably go with the Dell, but I haven't personally used either.

Unfortunately, there aren't many fast 4k VA panels outside the Odyssey Neo G7 and G8, which are outside your budget. Same goes for OLEDs in this form factor.

4k, 32", fast...is a tight set of constraints with not a lot of options.

VA style panel really did "wow" me on color, but do hold out for 4K at 32"..

I mention it because I favored the VA panel, and compromised on resolution on my budget, but after a year retrospect, I wish I had either a.) saved and got the 28" for cheaper and more pixel density, or else, b.) even if it was another panel type, embrace some pixelation and go for something truly "wow" bigger on the size.

And of all my first world problems, yeah that just rides me real rough day to day ha ha. Best of luck with your own

I've been using the 240Hz version of the 32" (non-Neo) G7 for more than a year. It's a superb display for Elite and I've been considering a Neo G8 upgrade at some point.

Didn't recommend them due to your budget, but yes, if you're fine with the curve, the display can't really be beat at the size/resolution, assuming you get a good sample. Samsung can be a bit hit or miss at times; if you do get one, test it thoroughly before replacing your current display with it, and do so while it's still easy to exchange.

Cheers for the advice! Yeah I have read that maybe quality control is a bit off on some Samsung monitors. Incidentally its now gone out of stock at Amazon in the UK, but I can still buy direct from Samsung, or another 3rd party such as Currys (shudder}.

but I do want the the RT and DLSS 3.0
I would not have high hopes from dlss 3.0 since i find it mostly a marketing ploy and less something truly desirable in terms of performance increase.
  • It will increase fps, but it will also increase latency and this is really stupid cause you want more fps to also decrease latency
  • it's producing less artefacts if you already have high fps (100+) - in which scenario you dont really need dlss3.0

so, dlss3.0 it's not really something to look for.
But other then that, 4080 is a solid card - hopefully the prices will drop a bit more

Greetings,

Well, late to the post but others finding this thread later may find it useful. It's the widescreen versus 4K dilemma.Getting both in one monitor
and works for gaming and excellent productivity (documents etc) isn't quite there yet.

A 4K monitor is 3840x2160 16:9 aspect ratio. That aspect is the same for 1920x1080 that has been around for decades. The first widescreen.
Widescreen in 2023 is typically 3440x1440 21:9 aspect ratio. Elite Dangerous released in 2013 16:9 game but looks pretty awesome in 21:9.

Higher aspect ratios as in 32:9 and ED side graphics are stretched where planets look like Easter eggs. With 21:9 this stretching is minimal.

I use an older Acer Predator Z35P 35in 3440x1440 21.9 120hz VA 1800R with a MSI GeForce GTX 1660ti GPU and it runs Elite Dangerous just fine. Giving other latest high graphic games it's probably time to upgrade.

The Acer Predator X38S Sbmiiphzx 38" UWQHD+ 3840x1600 21:9 175hz IPS 2300R is probably the best costing a lot. It does games and productivity.

At the Jan 2023 CES show Samsung displayed the upcoming Odyssey Neo G9 57in 7680x2160 32:9 1000R monitor which is essentially two 4k monitors and also HDMI 2.1 connection to support it. Maybe sell your motorcycle to fund this one!

So awesome widescreen ED or can't live without 4k?

Regards

Shrunken down images don't show anything. If they're not posted full size, nobody can see what they actually look like. A 1024 x 429 image is completely useless as a reference.

I post images on the Frontier Forum per the conversation. They are for all to see whatever hardware they use to show the differences and not the full versions taking up a lot more Frontier server space. I respect that. Many websites don't show the full versions and YouTube limits high rez videos we will never see.

But if important to you here is an ED F10 .BMG snapshot converted to .JPG as Frontier won't let me upload a 12.2 MB .PNG version. Using my older Acer Predator Z35P to capture it not bad per an older monitor. Want something better go buy the latest monitor then post amazing snapshots on your streaming website for all to see.

And that is what I'm talking about. That doesn't look good at all. The type is very fuzzy, the images aren't sharp at all. It is not "awesome" as you put it. It's not even in the ballpark of good 2k, let alone good 4k.

The reduced sized images you posted before make it look better than it actually does. That was my point.

Here's a shot compressed down to 500 kb off my regular 2k monitor for comparison.

It's really not even close on clean lines and text, let alone anything else.

Yes the full .JPC picture isn't close to my monitor in quality which easily displays 2k 16:9 2560x1440 plus 3rd party websites on the sides. The point was showing the added real estate in ED with 16:9 vrs 21:9. A 4K 3840x2160 16:9 will be sharper while a 3440x1440 21:9 will have a lot more to see in the game. As for quality let the customer decide but not with low quality .JPGs on a Forum.
