Hardware & Technical 4K monitor

I'm curious to see if anyone is using a GTX 970 with a 4K monitor and running Horizons... Is it playable?

I'm considering getting one for work and of course I'd love to run this game on it.

System specs are in the signature.

Does your company allow you to play Video games while at work?

I think you would struggle for 60 FPS. And stations and planets would be unplayable, like sub 20.

I run 5760x1080 with an R9 390 which beats a 970 at high Res. I get about 80fps in space and 30-50 on planets.

And 5760x1080 is 25% less than 4k

I work from home so it doesn't matter. :)

This is what I'm thinking as well. I am also considering as 21:9 1440p monitor as well as main work issue is real estate when I'm doing program compares. I wouldn't mind getting a GTX 1070 but prices are through the roof with this stupid mining craze going on. Right now I'm looking at a 42.5 inch 4k or a 35 in 21:9 1440p monitor.

Previously I had GTX 780 3Gb (pretty close to GTX 970 performance), it ran 1080p quite well @ slightly degraded Ultra settings.
Now I have GTX 980ti 6Gb (pretty close to GTX 1070 performance), it runs 4k quite well @ slightly degraded Ultra settings.

By quite well I mean stable 60 FPS almost everywhere. Certain situations can cause slight fluctuation below 60 and only on very rare occasions FPS goes below 50.

Personally I can't tell Full HD from 4K at screen sizes less than 40 inches... and my table can't put a 40 inch screen :D I only managed to ooooo and ahhhhh at 4K when I got my 50 inch TV for the living room....

Ok sorry, I know my comment contributes nothing to the discussion... please carry on.

I run an LG 43" 4k hdr tv as my monitor and the game is perfectly playable when maxed. My rig is a 2500k, 8gb vengeance, 390x and the game runs off a raid-0 array of mechanical drives. No idea of fps but tbh i've never felt the need to check, it's certainly smooth enough for me to play. I also run Youtube in the background for music and an Arduino ambilight kit software too with no trouble.

ctrl + F to check, FYI

yh this seems about right, i run horizons at 1440p on my 4k monitor from my R9 390, it can hack 4k60 most of the time but pretty much never on planetary surface, so i run at 1440p. But yeah i imagine i am right on the border, wouldnt surprise me that a 390X can do it.

As long as you have a 980/1070 or R9390X/RX480 you should get away with 4k60 on horizons. Assuming of course you have a half decent CPU

There is a pretty big difference in viewable area for the 42" vs a 35" ultrawide:

41% smaller viewable area. So factor that into your decision. I find the Ultrawides to have too little vertical height (only as high as a 27") which is why I run 3 x 32" monitors.
