Engineers 5,000Ly Away for Palin

I want to clear something up to those considering unlocking Palin. I'm not an explorer. I hate it. So I was dreading 5k from home star thinking you had to hop in a ship at LHS 3447 and go 5k away from there in a straight line.

However, once I got his invite I saw I indeed had already done that and thought "now there's no way, but hey, I'll take it!". Then I thought... it must mean that you must have traveled the sum of every lightyear from every jump made not to or from LHS 3447. My 'max distant from start' was 68,000 at that point and I knew for certain I never went that far away.

This might be old news to some, but as more players are coming around now and more like myself who have been around since the stone-age but took one look at engineers and decided you'd been fine without them all that time so why bother... that information should help.

Hop to the next system over from your starting star, choose the next farthest system you can jump from that star, and go back-&-forth. No need to go out of the bubble, weigh your ship down with scanners and such. If you're looking to do it as fast as possible that's what i'd do. Though I'm sure the money from going 5k in a straight line would be good as well as exploration rank but I don't know.

Disclaimer: This will still suck and won't be very pretty. But it'll still work and you can do it in a stripped down 'holler (U.S.)/ holly-err (U.K.)/ laurie (U.K. & Aussie)

Something is not right here. It is straight-line distance from your starting point.

I had like 1800 hours in game before I went to Palin, and I literally had to fly 5000 Ly away to unlock him. And when I reached 5k Ly from my starting system, that's when I got the invite. Prior to that, the furthest straight-line distance I had traveled was 500 ly.

OP, Think of it the other way. Exploration has never been so profitable as it is now.

As far as I'm aware, it 5kly away from your starting point... Not distance travelled.

I'm on my way back and on the last leg of my journey. I took a passenger mission out to Cerberus with a engineered Cutter and using the neutron route plotter. I too was dreading the mission but decided to do some exploration along with a passenger mission and it wasn't to bad. I outfitted my Cutter with a SLF and SRV which also helped break up the monotony.
I found some in explored systems and bodies and now I have my name on them plus the credit increase along with the passenger mission.
Roll playing the journey and keeping a log and posting some story line and screen shots to my Facebook group also made it more fun.
I now have the invitation to Pailen and tonight I'll roll into port to see my total credit winnings.

It is actually straight line distance from start system. Since I don't expect you could have forgotten a 68k ly exploration trip, there is only one explanation: this is a bug or glitch. So now be a good chap and open a support ticket, asking to take your Palin invite away! I am sure you would not want to have what you did not earn! :p

Actually, there were some rumors about that Palin trip. Dont know details, just some people were claiming that they can do something similar. I did it in old fashioned way to Thors Eye.

As an ex-coder, I can anticipate where the error in the code could be. @ FD : read the description of the Palin task.

I remember the days when I also thought 5,000 light years was a long distance to travel.
No wait, I don't, as it really never was. :)

With a little help of an engineer or two, you can cover 5,000 light years in a bit over an hour. Two hours with a small, slightly engineered ship.

There are three statistics specifically dedicated to jump distance and recorded on the information panel in this order:1) Total Jump distance2) Number of jumps3) Maximum Displacement from starting locationPalin is intended hat the maximum distance from start should equal or exceed 5000 light years from the starting system. (This is statistic#3) Should you discover that the #1 statistic (total distance) is being considered instead, this is clearly not intended in designa nd is therefore a considerable exploit. You are obliged to report such exploits to FDev. You risk ban of the account should you willingly take advantage of such.
