Elite / Frontier 50 Years Tomorrow

One small step for man?

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7523700.stm

On 29 July 1958, President Dwight D Eisenhower created the US space administration Nasa by signing the National Aeronautics and Space Act.

I personally find it sad that there are so few people looking up anymore. For all the extreme dislike that I have for George W Bush I have to give him kudos for laying out a decent time line for the future of space travel. I would really like to start getting excited about this stuff again.

It is a shame Steve, I wonder what would catch the public's imangination.

Is'nt there mention of another manned mission to the moon?

It seems that we are going to have to start looking upwards for a future whether we like it or not.

Whether it be climate change, deforestation, depletion of energy resources or simply inevitable population growth to an unsustainable level, we will be needing greener pastures to be moving on to this century.

i agree but i think we will blow a huge hole in this world before the enviroment or population growth force an exodus of this world:(

Personally I find the thought of finding out whether (as seems increasingly likely) there is life on Mars, and if so whether it is DNA/RNA based or something completely different intensely exciting. I hope we know (AND E4 GETS RELEASED) in my lifetime

Depends on how old you are. If you're under 50 you should be ok :)

Regrettably not! (just). I do remember watching the original moon landings in school: it was a really big deal.

Of course, back then we didn't know it was all a hoax.....

I'd rather keep my eyes on Europa - moon sized body with rocky core, icy crust and, as all evidence suggests, ocean of liquid water in between looks extremely promising.

Good point Draq! Wikipedia says this:

In 2006, Robert Pappalardo, an assistant professor within the University of Colorado's space department, said,

"We’ve spent quite a bit of time and effort trying to understand if Mars was once a habitable environment. Europa today, probably, is a habitable environment. We need to confirm this … but Europa, potentially, has all the ingredients for life … and not just four billion years ago … but today."

However, I'll keep my hopes pinned on Mars for the following scientifically rigorous reasons:

1. It's big and sexy enough to make funding for missions easier
2. I read on some very reliable web site (!) something about dark patches growing and shrinking over the seasons, suggesting microbial life.
3. HG Wells and David Bowie both thought there was life on Mars, so that's good enough for me!

I would have to conclude that Mr. Bowie, far from claiming the certainty of life on the planet, was merely making an impassioned suggestion that research into the possibilty of Martian life should be carried out.

Dont forget Gene Hunt!

Sorry but that did make me laugh!

Nice one turwhitt!

Let's not let others know we are into computer games and early 70's pop or they might think us less than cool:eek:

ps Let's hope E4 ISN'T a "godawful small affair"
