Newcomer / Intro 50KB/s up, 250KB/s down. Should I bother with this game?

I've been hearing bad things about bandwidth use and the always online functionality of Elite Dangerous. Will I be able to fully enjoy this game without lag or other serious issues? If it is truly unplayable could I get a refund? My absolute maximum connection speeds are 50KB/s up, 250KB/s down (KBytes). Will this be enough? Most other online games work for me as my ping is decent (somewhere between 25 and 40 depending on server). Also Australian so yeah...

I'm still unsure about purchasing at this point. Any advice would be great!

I don't recall the usage for playing online open (all players) but it is fairly conservative from what I remember.. I haven't looked at it for some time.
Its worth bearing in mind that you can also play online Solo. In Solo, since you won't be connecting to other players the bandwidth usage is extremely low and would be very playable, IMO.

I run a bandwidth meter at all times & in open play the game uses around 16kb/sec, sometimes a little more, often rather less. In solo play it uses a mere handful of bytes/sec. (Typically between 8 - 30)

I'm also in Oz with similar up/down speeds (thanks Telstra), and I have no problem with the game currently.
I did get a few stutters in early beta when there were a lot of other players around but none recently.
