Sidewinder Express 2 - The Journey to Beagle Point

07 Commanders and explorers - I hope 3307 is going well for you so far.
In 3306 we took a very basic planetary ops Sidewinder from the bubble to Colonia in a three month journey on Twitch.TV to see if it could be done, and with a jump range between 7.5-10 ly we discovered that it was. (Possibly a world first, but you know how those assumptions go - there is always someone out there better and crazier than yourself)

This year we're going to be embarking on a similar journey to Beagle Point. Now, this time I know for sure the journey will not be possible by willpower alone and intervention will be needed toward the end. So the mission isn't so much getting to beagle point, but rather discovering just how far the Planetary Ops Sidewinder with stock core modules, no engineering and guardian tech can go before having to hail a space taxi.

The build is here Sidewinder Express MK 2

Now, Many commanders will instant baulk at no AFMU, and for good reason - where is the AFMU? In this case I have opted not to use one as I want to only really use Neutron Star jumps as a necessity rather than a central logistics decision. By doing it this way we will encapsulate the feelings of Survival and Exploration in one neat package. With the fantastic DSSA set up we will have more options this time around in mitigating disasters too, so I am more confident than ever in the decision.

Not intended as an advertisement for my socials, but rather to highlight how/where the journey will be archived for those interested: The entirety of this journey will likely take 2 years and will be covered live on TwitchTV, with YouTube recaps of cool discoveries and logistics struggles, with all twitch revenue* donated to SpecialEffect. (* after twitch and PayPal take their cut).

The voyage will be heavily supported by tools and logistics advice from IGAU, ED Astro and ED Observatory and we will be departing tomorrow morning at 8am. I look forward to sharing cool stories and discoveries on this threat as time goes by. Have a lovely new year commanders, and thanks as always for being the best community in online gaming.

** Edit
We will push the little ship as far as it will go. On the last IGAU Fleetcarrier we stop at we will strip out the SRV bay as I will not need it for mats at that point and make as many T3 jump enrichments as we possibly can until I run out of ideas. At that point as a very very last resort we will hit a ride on a fleet carrier if it can not be done. (I sincerely doubt that it can)

Sir.....you are my kind of stupid!

Can't wait! Really enjoyed the last trip out to Colonia so I know you'll have this in the bag!

Good Luck CMDR.....may all your stars align!

A million rep (y) To you sir. Love these crazy journeys. You already know of the colossul amount of jumps and time this journey is going to take.

Rumour has it that's it's already been done in a stock sidewinder. I don't know the exact details but a Mod informed me of the details of that epic journey. You may find some tips for your "CRAZY" journey.

Fly safe commander o7

I don't want to rain on your parade, but crossing the Abyss requires ~33LY of range, and you'd need a LOT of Boosters/Jumponium in this build.

In response to the post above me, it wasn't a "stock" Sidewinder, but it was pre-Engineering.

I wish you the best of luck, but, unless there are a couple of Aces up your sleeve, your original build is a non-finisher. The design below is still COTS, but, with Jumponium, should see you through.

Awesome challenge! You must be mad ;)

As @Chrystoph mentioned, crossing the Abyss in a ship with that range will be nigh on impossible. A stock Sidewinder can get as far as Lone Star on the near edge of the Abyss, but you could try following the old Distant Worlds 3302 (DW1) route through the Abyss, it went via the Roncevaux Crossing as that was mapped specifically with short range ships in mind, albeit in the 20LY range. It'll add around 15,000 LYs on to the journey though.

One thing to note is that Beagle Point itself can't be reached if your ship can't make a 34 LY jump, so you'll need your Sidewinder to have at least 17 LY range to be able to get there using Jumponium.

Good luck! o7

In your build why do you use a 2H SRV bay instead of a 2G?

I suspect because this takes the jump range to exactly 8ly.
I mean, you could easily swap out the E rated internals for D rated and pop in a decent FSD for 18+ly.
I think the point is to have 8ly only...

In theory, you could go up the Sagittarius-Carina Arm, but that route in the ship you originally proposed, if it is possible, will take a Very long time and the Beagle Point jump of ~34 LY cannot be argued with.

I know it's not stated in this post, but for actually reaching Beagle, he intends to board a fleet carrier for the final jump(s).

Oh, good catch, I will edit that in. We will push the little ship as far as it will go. On the last IGAU Fleetcarrier we stop at we will strip out the SRV bay as I will not need it for mats at that point and make as many T3 jump enrichments as we possibly can until I run out of ides.

I will be studying the data as much as I can to see if there is a route of best fit - but we're a long way from that.

That may well be the arm we end up on as it happens. I will be veering slightly galactic east crossing onto Scutum-Centaurus around the Styx rift. I will investigate crossing over The Tyros Ridge close to the bleak lands as I have been told there are some Neutron stars fairly accessible in that region, possibly using the Distant Worlds II Galactic Highway at that stage.

IRL things came up and the expedition never got out of the Inner Orion Spur :\
The journey is still going to be on. With Odyssey coming out and as you've said, a change in IRL circumstances - I will be restarting this once things settle down. The key thing here is that I will not be streaming it on twitch. Work situations have changed were by I am in a role now that disqualifies me from live streaming - so a lot to consider, but it will be happening.

I did start it, and ended up cancelling it, so I am fully invested in starting over again as this journey is too good to pass up.
