Five Years of Colonia

On May 19th 3302, Jaques and his eponymous station entered hyperspace from the fringes of the bubble, heading for Beagle Point, and disappeared. A few weeks later, Commander Cly located the damaged station and a somewhat shaken Jaques in Eol Prou RS-T d3-94 on the edges of a nebula, and a major rescue operation commenced.

What followed changed the course of history. Jaques' Station was patched up, the system it had landed in was renamed Colonia, and it became a new hub of settlement. Now, it contains 72 inhabited systems supporting 12.5 million people, maintaining an independent and diverse settlement 22,000 LY from the bubble.

The first year of Colonia was one of rapid expansion - numerous groups, both well-established ones and those founded specifically for the occasion, brought supplies and people to the nebula, and the majority of the region's systems became populated. By the end of the year, Colonia had a largely self-sufficient economy, and was beginning to upgrade its facilities to support pilots and exploration missions independently.

In the second year, this expansion was consolidated - further stations were put in place, and as the first Thargoid skirmishes hit the bubble, we took in refugees and built up our defences. We had established our home, and it inspired others, with new settlements springing up in the deep space around the bubble.

At the start of the third year the Tir Research Labs were constructed, to ensure the future sustainability of the nebula, and to detect and neutralise threats to our survival. Under their direction, advanced hydroponics production and research facilities were constructed, allowing Colonia's population to be fed for the long term. It was during this year that Colonia's Third Regional Conflict - the Anarchist Wars - began.

The fourth year was the year in which the Anarchist Wars dominated Colonial politics. With the nebula secured against outside threat and economically sound, there came time to focus on internal political matters which had never fully been resolved. These wars raged throughout the fourth year, rewriting the tidy political consensus that had previously existed.

In the fifth year, the Anarchist Wars finally came to a close with the ultimate defeat of both sides, and the establishment of a new political consensus. With some stability restored temporarily, Colonia returned to its scientific roots, with the Holloway Bioscience Institute developing ground-breaking unique facilities for the study of vacuum lifeforms.

As we come to the end of that fifth year, Colonia is again going through major changes, with threats and opportunities both internal and external.
  • upheaval in the bubble has led to further waves of refugees fleeing Thargoid attacks, Federal and Imperial crackdowns, and seeking safe harbour. Hundreds of additional hydroponics and mining facilities have been built to provide the raw materials needed to support them.
  • the consequences of the new political consensus are themselves unstable, and the Seventh Regional Conflict is rising as competing forces attempt to consolidate their security control of the region, or to disperse it. Will the pattern of previous regional conflicts hold in the long run, or will this be the exception?
  • the Sirius Corporation, assisted by its Kumo allies, has established a foothold in the region. No doubt the Club, embarrased by the failure of its Exodus programme, will attempt to instead take over a ready-made bolthole. We will resist!
  • technological improvements are allowing further studies of space lifeforms as we try to make sense of the galaxy we live in.

Whatever happens next, Colonia's destiny is dependent on the support of independent pilots. No superpower, no hero will save us - though they may try to destroy us.

Ah those first few years were great. I made a couple of trips to help repair Jaques, then we had the initiatives to take the guides out there to help establish bases, where a handful of Cmdrs supporting Ed's 38 almost made it into the top ten the first time up against far larger, far more organised groups. But missing out the first time wasn't going to deter us, Colonia needs a decent supply of Tea and biscuits after all! Fortunately Dunker's Rest was managed the second time.

Colonia is one of the things about the game that I think is most special. An event that happened and discovered in a way not intended by Frontier meaning, certainly not the only time, they had to throw their plans out of the window and adapt to the way things now stood. Out of it came a place that is driven by the community in a way that the bubble never can be.

Long live Colonia!

Also things like this happen there :)

That first year was one of my favorite times in Elite. The teamwork during the CG to get Jaques working again, the August Exodus expedition, the Eol Prou nebula survey, the weekly Viper Races, the Outlander Challenge, Colonia militia patrols, the Christmas Convoy expedition, and lots of other initiatives all brilliantly put together by players banding together. Great times :)

Interesting, I really like the "emergent community play" that has developed around Colonia. For example with Carrier making trip there and "advertising" on discord/reddit for it. I really like when players are included in the game as part of it, instead of being the "chosen one" which doesn't feel as being a part of the world, as in many MMOs.

For me it's the year of megaship holiday cruises. Colonia is a major hub of galactic traffic. Exploration has become so much more comfortable and luxurious in these modern times.
