ANNOUNCEMENT: 1st Footfall Expedition: July 1st -- circa September 1st 2021

I am proud to announce today the 1st Footfall Expedition of 3307!

This expedition will be starting July 1st at 1900 and is expected to last through September 1st, though depending on how much the new planetary tech changes the nature of exploration, I may extend the duration of the trip. We will be starting out from the Nuenets system (7.81 Ly from Shinrarta Dezhra) and stopping off at Sagittarius A* for about a week. On July 11th, we will continue on to Colonia and stay there for about a month or so. After that, we will be heading back to the bubble with a tentative end system of Carthage.

This expedition will be supported by my Fleet Carrier, which has a shipyard and outfitting support, so feel free to bring whatever ships you'd like with you. If you are up for mining, I will also be paying Standard Galactic rates for any Tritium you find and I will pay 75% of the top going rates (large pad stations only!) for other big ticket materials such as Painite and Void Opals (no junk materials). I will post my current jump schedule for each leg of the expedition on my Fleet Carrier Owner's Club discord channel: #111-armageddon_mastadon623 (will be renamed to #111-endeavour_mastadon623 before the start of the trip). If you are not part of this discord server already, you can click the following link to join it: https://discord.gg/gdpR9Z3CfD.

How to participate:

If you would like to participate, please react to this post with a like. It is highly recommended---but not required---that all participants come with a ship equipped with a fuel scoop and around a 50 Ly jump range. Ships that are easy to get this sort of jump range include---but are not limited to---the Cobra III, Diamondback Explorer, Asp Explorer, Krait Phantom, or an Anaconda. In addition, since this trip is centered around Odyssey and on-foot exploration, everyone should also own Odyssey and the Artemis suit. However, if you'd just like to explore with us in Horizons, you can still tag along, though you will be missing out on some truly spectacular sights.

In addition, if you feel like helping me mine Tritium along the way, I would appreciate it if you could bring a large mining vessel along for the trip.

All real time communications will be happening in both system chat and in the discord. If you wind up getting left behind, reach out to me via both an in-game direct message and via a message on the discord channel---preferably with an "@" mention---and we'll come pick you up.

Sight Seeing stops

We are planning a number of sight seeing stops along the way to allow fellow explorers to take in some of the well-known sights and see how they've changed in Odyssey. Below is a list of systems currently on the sight seeing list:
If you'd like to request a sight seeing stop, reply to this thread and tell us why we should stop there. If we happen to find something impressive out there, we may make a detuor for that find as well.

I hope to see you all out in the black!

Hey, pretty cool. Just a quick question though-- About the part quoted above. Any particular reason for specifying ships, rather than just the minimum jump range? There are many other ships that can manage 50+ ly jumps (Beluga, Dolphin, Orca, Python, Type 6, Type 7, Cutter, Krait Mk2, and several others).

This wasn't intended as a restriction, but as a guideline for new players. Basically I don't want them coming in E rated sideys expecting to have a good time. However, it's becoming more and more clear that the guideline as it's worded now is defeating the spirit of the rule: which is to come with a ship that's built with exploration in mind.

I'm going to revise the post to make all that clear. Thanks everyone for your feedback!

The amount of time you will need to commit to this expedition depends upon how long you want to stay with us

This expedition is divided up into three legs:
  1. The Nuenets to Sagittarius A* leg should take about 3--4 days worth of travel time. We will be staying in the Sagittarius A* region until around July 11th.
  2. The Sagittarius A* to Colonia leg should take about 1 day of travel time. We will be panning to stay in the Colonia area until August 22nd.
  3. The Colonia to Nuenets leg should take 2--3 days worth of travel time, depending on how many sights seeing stops we want to add along the way. We should be arriving by September 1st.
If you're only interested in part of the journey, there are usually other Fleet Carriers going back to Sol from both Sagittarius A* and Colonia. You can find current travel plans for other Fleet Carriers by visiting the Fleet Carrier Owners Club discord server at https://discord.gg/4dwQVeZq and navigating to the appropriate channel under the "Hitchhiker's guide" grouping of channels. According to the #route-info channel, there is on average one FC per week heading to and from Sagittarius A* and the bubble and 3 per week heading from Colonia to the bubble.

So pragmatically I would plan to be with the expedition at least until the Colonia leg is completed. Then if you decide you want to end the expedition early, you should be able to make arrangements with another fleet carrier to get there. There's really no other commitment required of you beyond that.

If you'd like to also bring along a laser mining vessel to help mine for Tritium and get paid for it (galactic average rates), that would be great. It would also be a great opportunity for you to make money selling Tritium to other Fleet Carriers in need of it who might be willing to pay more than I am. This is especially true in Colonia, where there are lots of Fleet Carriers and precious few stations that sell Tritium in sufficient quantities to refuel a Fleet Carrier.

EDIT: The times are approximations based on how long Fleet Carrier expeditions took in Horizons. There's more to do when exploring in Odyssey and I can't really give a good estimate for how that will affect timelines. So it may end up taking longer to reach each destination. I'll make up for the difference by taking it out of the Colonia layover period.

Thanks for the info! I am also wondering when you say 3 - 4 days, how much time per day do you think? I ask because I can only spend 1 - 3 hours a day playing and don't want to commit to something I can't follow through with. Thanks!

As long as you log off while docked on my Fleet Carrier each day while travelling, you can participate as little or as much as you'd like w/o having to do all the jumping. Just communicate with me in-game or via discord if you need me to hold the Fleet Carrier for a little bit and I'll make it so. You can also bookmark it and you'll always know where it's at. If you fall behind, let me know immediately and we'll work something out to get you back with the pack. I won't leave you stranded in the black.

This is something that is right in my wheelhouse, but I’m just not ready for it yet! I started Odyssey in Colonia, got my first “first footfall” out there, but came back to the bubble for suit and gun engineering. I’m not done with that yet :(.
I will 100% join you guys and gals on the 1st but will have to say goodbye much too soon, which is my loss.
Thank you Mastadon for the effort in arranging this. It’s exactly what I was looking forward to in Odyssey before I got my hands on it.
