Using method of self-propelled gliding on escape pods for on-foot flying with 'goids ;)

Not searching for the easy ways here - and trying to "get gut" with this a bit extravagant method of transportation. Geysers? No, escape pods are much more fun! ;)

General idea is to ride on the escape pod that is under the effect of the Thargoids tractor beam. Have tried this earlier and retried it recently after the most recent patch - to check the new "fixed" fog system related to Thargoid related POI's.

for anyone interested here are the step-by-step instructions (recap from the screenshots thread)

Location -
System: HIP 16613
body: 1 a
coordinates: 11.099, 96.026
test subjects: our field agent (one), occupied escape pod (few), thargoid interceptors (few)
outcome: agent wasted, reason: critical injures

Step-by-step instructions:

Find an appropriate transportation media:
"Hello there - mind to give me a ride?"
Mount up and wait for the carrier...

... and here it comes!

Be sure you stored a spare suit on-board -
just in case things turn out a little dirty
Hop!
It actually works!
Be sure to keep your balance right

"I can fly moment"
(Too late on the train - another failed attempt)
Nearby there
Terminus?
Ups... overshoot
Mission failed!
Yep, do not forget to activate shield
just before the impact with the surface
- that was my error on the first successful launch =)

Have fun and glide dangerous!

You are totally crazy - 👍

Yeah, taking a well-deserved break from more than month-long process of mapping new Odyssey settlements.

It's quite important feature of this game - Elite dangerous let us do some really crazy things=) Hope it persists....
Yeah, I'm still testing which ship is best for catapulting me into orbit. :)

I have hoped that the Thargoid interceptor could be that kind of a ship... Slight chance - but seemingly the interaction model is not in release so far. Well, I'll wait...
Besides I've recently discovered that an on-foot commander can actually ride on top of a rolling commodity barrel. Imagine: "Rolling biowaste championship" - faster, further and all that.... =)

SRV racing was yesterday :ROFLMAO:

Oh my god, this is genius! I'm totally giving this a try next week.
Afaik, one can do both things separately - geysers or ships can provide quite a good vertical thrust for on-foot commander, while one can do the flying with Thargoids kind of shananigans by catching with the feeding process of one of them at barnacles forest (if I understand it right the feeding whirlpool scoops any objects in proximity including on-foot commanders). However in the latter case the vertical component is not as spectacular, and - while scoping objects Thargoid turns to face them, when "feeding" it uses the "opposite side" =)
With escape pods some little tricks to be taken into consideration:
1) I haven't tried to arrive at the site with a stock of them, rather using the one that spawns there. However a gentle bump by the SRV is usually necessary to set it in a more appropriate position - can be done by on-foot commander, but the process usually takes longer. Beware that you have no much time to finish all the preparation procedures (depends on the number of interceptors and where they do spawn).
2) It looks like applied traction force is big enough to scoop escape pod with a commander on it, but not sufficient to pull up an srv if it blocks the movement (even if slightly assisted with vertical boosters). Could be interesting to try it with two commanders on the same pod (doubtfully there is enough place for more).
3) Also it does look like that the absolute value of the gained velocity vector do depend not only on the time commander have succeeded to remain on the pod, but also on the initial distance between interceptor and the object, i.e. probably in order to maintain constant the applied traction time (the latter can be affected, however, by blocking of the target object). This distance is evidently bigger in cases when Thargoid is not directly above, however this also means bigger horizontal component of the velocity vector, and the latter could be difficult to compensate in order to maintain balance by the on-foot commander. Note, that the Thargoid initial position for scooping is indirectly affected by the commander ship parking location (being the highest priority target it is always checked before anything else). Mind that those are so far only assumptions that do require more considerate investigation.

@Alec Turner , beware - yesterday I have decided to record some telemetry before my departure from the site (using StatusDisplay) - and all my successful approaches to Thargoids resulted in CDT's. Nothing changed from the previous sessions except StatusDiplay launched in parallel and FPS limit set in options (to reduce the heat during idling in game menu) - at least those I'm aware about...
