6 month trip planned

i'm new to the game but to the point that I'm ready to take a 6 month trip out side the bubble. I plan on mapping and just general look around the question I have is when I log out do I need to land on a planet or just float around in space stopped I cant seam to find a direct answer on this

Just log out in space; keep clear of stars / planets / asteroid belts etc so your ship doesn't get swatted while you're out of the game

I'd always stop in a system that looked interesting, find a planet or moon, drop out of supercruise nearby and drop speed to zero.

I don't think its necessary to drop out of supercruise. But when I've logged off while in supercruise, I seem to return to the game quite a ways away from where I stopped.

Landing on a planet should be fine too, AFAIK. If this were real life, I'd stop landed as often as possible. That toilet is a lot easier to use with gravity.

I look forward to the day when I can get out of my seat, perhaps power down non essential systems, go to the back of the ship, fix myself a drink, catch up on the Galnet news on the computer monitor in my cabin, and hop into the bed and shut down for the night.

This is the key - you can generally log out anywhere, but in asteroids you can potentially be respawned inside a rock and insta-destroyed, so fly out from any rings before logging out.

Also, if playing in Open be wary of logging out on a surface near anything interesting, as you could be respawned near/in/on/under another Cmdr's ship.
