695 kills, 11 MCr and...

... still competent!

I hit competent at 221 kills mostly from nav beacons without a KWS. Since then I've mostly been RES farming with a KWS, sometimes in a wing. I've got 682 bounties and 13 war zone kills making 695 and I'm still competent.

I thought we were fairly sure it was roughly double the kills for each rating increase - I trebled.

So I'm confused but still enjoying killing anacondas, dropships and clippers. Never yet seen a wanted asp at a RES though...

It's also not a fixed number, as the rank and possibly type of ship you kill have an influence too. In other words, killing lots of harmless ships will take you longer to rank up than if most of your kills are competent or expert.

I know it's dependent on lots of things but 700 seems to be at the upper bound of ranges I've seen. In a RES I'm always trying to go for the bigger ships so I'd have thought I'd need less bounties than some. Maybe time to go hunting in conflict zone but they're less fun as there are no asteroids to play in...

But yes - much more pew pew needed :)

"we were fairly sure" but still incorrect :)

No one knows the exact scoring milestones but it's not measured by kills. You get more points for higher ranked targets.

Just keep having fun. The ranks will come.

...but that's also the only place to find Elite enemy ships to destroy, in a RES you won't see anything above Master. and yeah, CZs are rather boring and they don't pay well. four times the effort, a quarter the payout. enjoy.

I have a feeling 1.3 is going to change all this.

Hmmm.. I've come across Elite ships in a RES and a Nav Beacon. But I do think mixing it up and hitting some CZ's will help advance your rank, so probably worth a shot (excuse the pun).

The payout is less important (I can earn at easily twice the rate in my T7) but the amount of fun is. A combat zone is just a case of 'next hostile target, pew, pew' and repeat.

I'm at over 10,000 kills and I'm still deadly. I know the feels bro.

I guess we're doing it wrong somehow! I'm enjoying it apart from the part when I now check my ranking after every kill - if it would just go up I could ignore it and get on with the game :)

This is the reason I've only ever done about 2 missions - they're about to get soooo much cooler! :)

You have to remember that the number listed as Bounties is not the number of kills but the number of bounties you have collected.
When you KWS a target, it may have 2 or even 3 bounties.

If you've been BHing with a KWS the whole time, I'd half your number of bounties and add number of warzone kills to get an idea of total kills.

I'm a bit confused by the rank system, I killed around 30 targets yet I did not advance a rank however I did 3 trades and I advanced a rank? What's up with that? Not only that but its also easier to make money with trading.
A bit of a difference wouldn't be too bad but the difference is absolutely absurd.

Ranks are not based on kills, they're based on advancing reputation with the various planetary and galactic factions. The 'military rank' missions tend to want to make you think it's all about kills, but it's really more of a political thing than a military one.

Cashing in bounties and bonds, making trades, selling exploration data, and running BB missions all contribute in one way or another to how a faction views you. As you progress with your reputation with the various factions, you'll gain ranks, some automatically, others via BB missions.

Meh. I come from eve. I'm glad there's still some 'magic' i don't have nailed down to a spreadsheet of numbers in ED. I mean once you learn all the most efficient way to grind rankings, currency, xp, what ever in any game it immediately becomes all about the metagame and any immersion/fun kinda goes out of it.
