£700 to get the best possible VR and immersive Elite experience

Hi there, thought i would register after lurking a while. I can no longer resist the call of Elite... my brother let me have a go of his copy on his rather low spec machine and it was like 1984 again the legend has returned...

However i want the best possible experience of Elite. I have heard ;) that the best experience is with a DK2 so this is why i have held back on getting Elite.

I have £700 to splash on making this as immersive as possible. Of course about £280 of that goes to the DK2.

current specs

I5-4690k 3.5ghz
8 gig 1600mhz RAM
Crucial MX100 256gig SSD
PCS+ 4096mb R9 290 graphics card
550w Superflower "80 plus" PSU

Heres what i think i need:

Occulus Rift DK2 £280 approx
Saitek X52 Hotas Flight Controller System Joystick (PC) £99
Elite Dangerous Cockpit Set £299 from http://elitegaming.org.uk/shop/Elite-Dangerous-Cockpit-Set

However i have concerns my graphics card will not be up to spec so i will maybe have to sell the 290 and get a GTX980 ?

Another concern i have is that because Elite has to be run in extended mode (as a 2nd monitor) does that mean my main monitor has to have a good refresh rate of 75hz or above? (currently main monitor only has 60hz refresh rate) basically to maintain good fps above 75 as the refresh rate of the DK2 is 75hz yeah?

thanks for any tips :D

Typing on my phone so I'll keep it quick - forget that gaming seat, for way cheaper you can go to a dealer or scrap yard, buy a seat from a Range Rover sports or Porsche Cayenne for a fraction of the price, pay a small amount to have a frame attached, and then use the money left over to pay for a BKgamer and some extra cash towards a better GPU.

Your DK2 will run at 75hz, your normal monitor is fine at 60hz, it won't affect ED

Welcome Decado, great attitude to start with
If your going to play a game, play it the best it can be

The DK2 won't disappoint , to be fair your specs should be ok I can't speak for your AMD card as I'm on team green but I'm sure some of the AMD guys will chip in

Your monitor should be fine my main monitor is 2560x1080 @ 60Hz native resolution
And my DK 2 defaults to 75Hz without me having to make any adjustments to the main monitor.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you've got your DK2

I am using an R9-270, which is several steps worse than the R9-290, and it runs fine for me at minimum setting. My CPU is a 4GHz i7.

see my "Elite dangerous the inspiration" thread for a simple kickass chair build...if you're the handy type, you could have one built in a day or two.

wow that a lot for a chair that looks like it will be hard and not very comfi, ive seen more padding in my cats bed! if your gona have your dk2 on, you notice what the desk looks like.

yeah ive come to my senses on that one :D Now thinking about getting something like a reclinable lazy-boy and modding the armrests with vesa brackets or something.

ohh i was wondering is it worthwhile having a thread where everyone details their system specs and what kind of VR experience they get with the rift and how they run it?

Something like...?

System: I5 4690k R9 290 SSD etc
Drivers: 14.12 Omega AMD drivers
Judder: RES zones only
Latency: None
Mode: Extended/Primary Monitor ON
Overall Experience: Smooth as baby's bum

id say start simple,

go big on the gfx card gtx 980, try to find a used dk2 (that is near mint with unscratched lenses)
[or just used that whole budget for a titan x :) ]
and the hotas you can get an x52 PRO from ebay bnib for 150 CAD which is under 100 quid.

done...

forget all this chair nonsense for now

id set aside 50 pound for a water cooler AIW and get that cpu to its proper clock.

that alone would give you massive gaming gains.

Actually for immersion, the chair makes quite a difference, It does not have to be expensive, my prototype chair for my VRMachine below is a really cheap £40.00 office chair with the arms removed and some old shelves bolted into place. once the joystick had moved from the table to the right height attached to the chair everything suddenly just felt 'right',

one of the best features of my sport seat chair is the holes in the headrest. it allows me to run the oculus cable through it thus completely eliminating the "drag" that is felt with the cable hanging over your shoulder. so yes, the chair has a huge impact in several ways.

Only a few days from ordering DK2 (payday :D)

might get these as well.

One of these chairs

So will attach the vesa brackets to the chair arms and get maybe velcro. Saw someone do this in another thread :D

Wont get a new graphics card just yet because will wait for the 390x to show up :)

For me Elite was the most expensive game I ever played.

My brother showed me the rift and I fell in love after the first flight! So I needed one as well :D

So upgraded to i7 4770, gtx 780 and 16GB Ram.
I bought everything second hand which allowed me to cut the costs in half.

Everyting runs very smoothly!
And it's just so big a difference than monitor play.
Only the texts can sometimes be a bit hard to read. But apart from that I wouldn't want to fly without it.

So surely go for it and have tons of fun!

*edit* http://elitegaming.org.uk/shop/Elite-Dangerous-Cockpit-Set This is awesome! Want one! :)

How can that feel right?? You're piloting a ship in your bare feet! Everyone knows real pilots fly with their boots on!!! :p :D

Is that the case?

Picture this;
You've been flying your Asp for over 30.000LY. You've been away for months already. Not sure about the Asp, but with no shower around you might want to take your boots of every now and then. ;)

Ah, good point!

Honestly though, I always get a chuckle over how goofy people look with this whole VR setup.
I'll soon be one of them. Can't wait to hear the crap my wife gives me when she sees me like this.

That's ... I fly my real airplane with bare feet. Unless I'm going over hostile terrain, like mountains....

The rudders feel so much nicer bare feet. I also drive bare feet every day when I drive home from my swim.... I like it there too!

Lol, that's the good part about this VR setup.
I wear my Oculus, and also a headset with voice control.
And on that headset I always play some kind of "space" music. Just put it loud enough and you won't hear the crap your wife gives you :D

*edit* I have to add to that, my wife always scares the out of me. She comes walking into my office. But I never hear or see her coming. She taps on my shoulder and makes me leap out of my chair!

My DK2 arrived today :D :D :D
Received my Thrustmaster Hotas X yesterday (it was only £30)

:D

So now im just setting up the DK2 and i want to try the various demos that are recommended...also want to get Alien Isolation and of course ELITE :D

I think some people here also recommended some kind of screen protectors for the lens because they scratch easily?
