72 Hour in Colonia

Here is short recount of my first 72-hour in Colonia.
I left bubble over a month ago on a long journey to Ishum's Reach then settle in Colonia. I heard a lot of things about this area and since Exploration is what I really want to do more, relocating here made sense. I don't do powerplay nor I am into politics. So other than engineering there is really nothing I cannot do here in Colonia, so I was told. Even with some engineers available in Colonia looks like I will be ok to fulfill my needs.

After I got back from Ishum my first task was to find a home base. No I did not want to live in Jaques Station although it would be had been convenient. It just too busy and too populated for my taste. Instead, I wanted to find a place somewhat away but still within comfortable shopping distance. I spent ~4 hours going through on board Map and EDSM database and visited quite a few systems and their stations. Nothing tweaked my interest. I cannot say I was sure what really I was looking for, but I believed I will know when I see it. Other than a peaceful out-of-the-way station I did not really have long wish list. Finally, I stumbled here.......! Could not believe my eyes but I knew without a doubt this is the place I was looking for! Robardin Dock at Carcosa system.

It's a station inside an Asteroid, only 8 Ls from the star. I have been in asteroid stations before, but all of them were in or close to asteroid belt. But this one is a lonely asteroid body orbiting the star. As I flew closer my excitement rose at the sight. It was a great sight.

After station control cleared me to dock I made my way through the mail slot to dock. Was not sure what to expect. It was small. No more than 8-10 docking bays all together. Here is the sight from my cockpit. Cant get any closer to dirt than that.

I was not doing any research on stations before visiting them any of them. I was on a mission to pick a place based on first impression. So naturally I had no clue what this station offered. To my amazement this little station actually sells some good ships. It even sells Anaconda, not hat I will get one any times. And It for all the Alliance ships! Did not expect that at all! Not just ships, it also got quite good assortments of modules as well. So really, I don't need to go shopping at large popular stations. Doing a quick run down of my inventory need, it got 90% of what I need.
Spent couple hours strolling and looks like I will have to spend most of my station time in my quarter and shipyard, which I don't mind at all. The cafeteria, store, lounges area all are somewhat small although not crowded.

Now that task #1 is complete, I need to figure out a way to create stream of cash. Fitted my Krait for some bounty hunting and headed out to find some res sites. To my surprise I could not find any res sites. If I remember right res sites are usually in Extraction based economy systems. But the galaxy map did not show me any. Later going over log in my quarter I found on EDDB that there are indeed 15 Extraction based Systems within 80 Ly. Probably will check them out again sometime.

On my way back to station I answered a distress call where a convoy was being attacked. Since I was ready for battle I gave them a hand. Not sure if the pirate ships in this area are little too strong or my ship needs little more tweaking, it took me little longer to destroy them. But I came away with ~2 mil Cr and lots of Thank You in the process.

Since Bounty Hunting was not easy to come by, decided to check out the Mission board to see what are they pay outs and job. I could not find any combat mission at this Robardin Dock, but I was excited greatly to see the payout for the Transport missions. If I have a ship with ~150 unit of cargo I can easily make few mils within an hour. Going to see if I can refit the Krait to haul some stuff.

I also checked out the Trading commodities and routes, must say there are some nice clean money to be earned.

I also wanted to check out the mining opportunities. Headed out with a DSS to see if I could find some hot spots. Within couple hours I found few hot spots closer to home that I am going to go on some mining sessions. I have never done deep core mining before. Looking forward to giving it a try. Some prices research showed that although they are not as high as bubble, it's not bad given where I am and everything this region has to offer.

Lastly I checked out the Passenger transporting opportunity. Again really glad to see the abundance of it. So money making does not look like will be a problem.

I will finish the log with some final thought on primary goals.
  • I want to get back into the black again. In my last journey to Ishum I have spent a lot of raw mats on synthesis. I need to refill everything.
  • There are few modules I need to engineer so unlocking Colonia engineer is important.
  • My cash reserve is currently dwindling. So need to do some work to build 300 mil cash reserve.
  • I am debating between DBX and Krait to take on my next journey. Might open another log about it as I weigh in pros/cons and prepare.

I am glad I decided to come here. From the look of it, I don't think I am missing out a lot from the bubble living. I am still getting used to the density of stars in space. For some reason I am finding it more peaceful out here.

Clearly it had been way more than 72 hours by now. But this mini log seems unfinished without leaving some final thoughts.
I have decided to permanently stay in Colonia. Already sold off unimportant belongings back in bubble, terminated my station lease, transferred what I want to keep. After spending several days here, I am not finding any reason to go back.

Unlocked Mel Brandon and Etienne Dorn so far. Marsha Hicks and Petra Olmanova will be unlocked by next week. Really these 4 engineers all I need for what I want to do my ships. And they are all one jump away from my new home! Sure beats many jumps and running all over the place inside bubble to get engineering done.

There are not many HazRes around here. But couple that I found will fulfill my combat training just fine. The HazRes in Deriso alone got hours of Wanted ship supplies.

Ran few missions from different stations to try the mission quality. Not bad at all. Passengers missions are also in abundance. I can become a full time Bus driver for many weeks.

During off hours I have been going for stroll to scan out rings for mining spots. Plenty of good spots to keep mining for days. It is probably due to higher number of Pristine systems in the vicinity. Have not done any active mining here yet. But planning a small Void Opal mining trip in couple days.

I am not into powerplay nor have any interest/need to get those special weapons. So, what am I giving up by staying in Colonia for good?
Only thing comes to mind, Crystal Shard. It was great to be able to go to Crystal Shard and top up all my minerals for my last long exploration trip to Ishum. I have not found anything similar here yet.
Also, not sure where to farm the Grade 5 Manufactured mats like I used in Fed or Imperial space. But my ship needs are very small. So I don't need heck of a lot of materials. Probably I will be able to gather necessary mats from destroyed ships in hazres. I did a lot of engineering before I left bubble. So not a huge loss there. As for raw materials, there are loads of planets with most raw materials I need, just need to do some SRV running around for several days. I like going for a drive on surface now and then, collecting materials to top up will just be bonus.

I know I mentioned in my last message I like it here. That has not changed as I still do like it here. The feeling of coming back to my Asteroid home after days of hard work is just priceless. My #1 goal right now is to fill up all my synth mats, so I can get back to the void again while enjoy the quiet life of Colonia.

G5 mats (IC and MEF usually for me) are common rewards for high-rank sightseeing missions and those you can find plenty of around Colonia, just need to get faction rep up to be offered these missions. That's one way to get your trade capital.

Now that you mentioned it, a close inspection of the reward for those missions I do see the high grade mat rewards. This could be an excuse to rent one of those Saud Kruger fancy ships. :) Never flew one yet.

Saud Kruger ships are the finest in the galaxy. You do not need an excuse to fly one, you need an invitation and a reservation :)

Any ship that can mount a single class 5 business cabin can do these no problem. But yes, SK will add a certain cachet and prestige to your operations.

But you could do it in an AspX or a couple dozen other ships. I like the Orca for this.

I said earlier that I get IC from these, but I think I meant Biotech Conductors. Exquisite Focus Crystals come along regularly too plus Modified Embedded Firmware.

No, there are a number of them tucked in to the galaxy.

I ran a search on EDDB for 'asteroid bases' and it returned 51 of them.

According to the results, the closest to Sol is Big Pappa's Base in the system Andhrimi, 58 light years from Sol.

is this the only station in the galaxy that looks like that?
I myself visited handful few other asteroid around bubble. But all of them were inside asteroid belt. This particular one in Carcosa is a lonely asteroid seems to orbit a High Metal Content planet just 8 ls from the sun. I was not even looking for an asteroid base. I stumbled upon on it as I was going from system to system trying to find a place to call home.
Since this is procedurally generated I am assuming there has to be lot more like this in the galaxy.

HUH! I did not know I could search by base type on EDDB even though I use the site regularly for many things! The type dropdown was right in front of my eyes the whole time. :D

Good thing too as when I look for a new home I need to filter out the Coriolis stations. Or more accurately run searches for Ocellus and for Orbis.

Can't stand me no Coriolis stations. Like the website though :)

There are others out there (try Kojeara for another 'free' asteroid base nearby), but no stations in Colonia are procedurally generated - all of them have been hand-placed for various reasons. (Similarly all system populations, governments, installations and megaships)

Oh! Didn't know that. Well I am grateful to ED Dev for placing this one in such location in Carcosa. :)

To @Ian Doncaster , I just followed the link of Colonia Census from your signature. Very impressive Database on Colonia!
Is it somewhat up to date with automatically pulled data?
I see there are 3 projects on going, one of them to Upgrade PA blueprints at Etienne Dorn with Progress updates for different grade. Are this player controlled projects or something like old CG?

Sorry this is completely new to me. Just trying to understand it better and contribute if at all possible.

You may just have got unlucky with which systems you checked out - 44 of the systems have at least one, according to my records. https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/systems#haz
I was following this database which showed only 3 HazRes within 400LY of Carcosa,
