After lots of discussion & thoughts with close friends, maybe a 1070 is overkill.

I admit, I get caught by hype-trains very easily. :D

So here's my next question.

GTX 970. I know it's a significant upgrade over my 960, and if I forget VR, which looking at my eyesight does seem to be difficult in reality, then it's all I think I'll need to ensure solid Elite Dangerous performance in the future.

What do people think? Note, I only care about Elite performance. All other games mean nothing to me, as long as I get a quality Elite experience.

Now that I'm here, I should also ask what kind of PSU is needed for a 970? Currently have 700W.

Cheers again guys.

What resolution do you play? A 970 would be a nice upgrade over a 960 regardless, and with other people upgrading there might be some good used deals in the short term. New ones might take a hit too, and I'm keeping an eye open there. Maybe wait for AMD's offering to flow into the market also? Then we'll really see how everything fits together. I wouldn't mind some low cost last generation cards myself :)

Power wise, depends on what else is in your system but 700W should be plenty unless you have another serious power hog in there. I'm running a 6700k+980Ti on a 750W and that's way more than I need.

Hey there.

I'm running an i5 4690 @ 3.5ghz as my CPU.

I play at 1080p.

I would also go for a 1070. I have a GTX 970 with an old i5 2500K. Running on 2560*1440 never dropping below 50 fps. The 970 is a beast for its money, but the 1070 is the better choice for the future.

I think it has the same (or even lower!) power requirements than the 970. Either way, your gold. Superb cards.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback.

Over the day I've been thinking what kind of GPU upgrade to save for.

Right now, I'm completely undecided. All options are on the table right now.

Patrick, you make an excellent point about thinking of the future of this game. It's going to get bigger, and will need better hardware to keep up the quality.

So a 1070 is anything but out of the question.

I'm simply evaluating all possible routes. :)

You are right, but the GTX 1070 is the new generation. And it is a jump forward, significant. Do not hesitate to take the GTX 1070 instead of GTX 970. Do not hesitate ...

Oh it's definitely the option I most want to take, and probably will take.

But I'm a cautious sort so I felt implored to evaluate all options. To a lesser degree I was looking at 980's too, but they're just too pricey for me.

1070 though, it's at the limit, but I'm willing to save for one, given the price/performance it offers.

Upgrading for what purpose?

Do you play to look at it or have some fun?

Seriously, a slight improvement in graphics will be hardly noticed in the heat of a busy game. Any improvement will be largely dependent on your monitor. You need to spend a couple of grand to really see much there.

I suggest you'd be far better spending your spare cash on more RAM, perhaps improving your sound quality.

At the end of June the new AMD Polaris cards are coming out. NO formal performance stats out at present, but rumours talk of it being up with a GTX980 Nvidia card but for a confirmed retail price of just US$199 .

I would therefore recommend keeping hold of your money until these cards launch, then you can assess your options.

For most people the NIVIDA 1070 and 1080 represent overkill.

If a 1070 is overkill for you, and if Elite is the only game you will play for the next 3 years, get the upcoming 480 from AMD if the red team is OK for you.
However, a 970 requires 500w. And so does the 1070. And a 1070 isn't overkill for games that will be released in the coming 3-4 years. :)

Edit. Oh btw your 970 might not be enough for 1080p once we have atmospheric landings and all the new graphical features like trees or water simulations.

Heck, if you want a gpu relatively soon, don't go with the 1070. Ordered one on the 10th, just been informed the estimated wait time before any units are ready to ship is 90 days!!!! By the time the thing arrives it will be old news and time for an upgrade again!

90 days!? Reference card or partner card?

500w PSU, i5-3570, GTX 960 4gb WF OC

Max settings, 60fps everywhere. Sure a 970 would be nice but I'd avoid it personally and go for a 1070 instead, or a 980 at least.
But if it's for Elite, no need. Game is very well optimised. If I can run it on max settings....ok so I'm only at 1080p so I guess for 4k maybe you need more power?

I was thinking of upping my resolution.

I'm in the market for a new monitor, and a 4K looks attractive.

However, will a 1070 do 60fps at 4K, or should I be looking at a 1440p instead? 1440p, by the way, would be great too. :)
