980ti to 1080ti upgrade

Anyone go from a 980ti to 1080ti? Were you satisfied with the upgrade? I feel like I'm on the cusp of getting this game damn near as clear as I can get it but need just a little extra powah. Plus I'm looking at some of these aftermarket ones with dual HDMI ports which would be sweet.

I am happy with the upgrade but still can't max in VR. I am running 1.25ss and 1.75 HMD quality nd things on high rather than ultra. It's pretty much smooth with some jitter on the interfaces in stations (ASW) with the 980ti I had to have things turned down further. Interestingly I no longer feel ill bombing around in the SRV on planets where as I would last about 10 minutes with the 980ti so clearly something improved there.

I went for the MSI Gaming X 1080ti from the MSI Gaming 980ti Golden Edition

Certain sections of the game are poorly optimised.
Specially station menus for some reason.

1.25ss and hmd of 1.75 is a rather silly high amount of supersampling.
As I see it, that's a total ss level of almost 2.2x.
If you don't go nuts with the ss you actually can max nearly all settings apart from ambient occlusion.

And the thing with supersampling is that you do not get any more detail with supersampling.
The screens are the limited factors here, what you do get is nicer transitions cause of the downsampming that then happen in the headset.
It is a bit like matching two grids of varying density on top of another you might actually get more benefits by going lower. Personally the sweet spot for headroom and fidelity is no more than SS 1x and hmd q of 1.25.

Thst allows me to basically have steady 90 except for a few odd cases with most settings, again apart from ambient occlusion at high-ultra levels.
Not vr ultra but ultra ultra.

These settings where also fine for hmd q 1.5x but since I play a lot in wings and instances with other players give me a hit on fps. Especially in res sites and surfaces.
It's either hmd q down to 1.25 or dropping shadows to high. I prefer shadows.

I went from a 970 to a 1070 (neither were Ti models). I'm pretty happy with it, and there is a noticeable performance gain.

Some suggestions for graphics settings in VR, that I've picked up here on the forum. These seem completely counter-intuitive, but I think everything performs better this way, and it gets the UI text to be about as clear as it can get, given the resolution limitations.

  • Turn off ambient occlusion, blur, and anti-aliasing.
  • Set the Supersampling to 0.65 or 0.75. I have mine at 0.65 currently.
  • Set HMD quality to 2.0, or as close as you can get without performance problems. You'll be able to set it higher than before, if you do the above steps.

I think this basically shifts the supersampling and smoothing to the VR system, while reducing the performance impact from the game's side. I was skeptical, but it works.

Been fiddling myself today.

Especially SS and ok there is a bit more of an impact of 1.5 vs 1.25.
Last time I tested this I suspect I must have forgotten you have to drop to menu and reload for the new hmd quality setting to take effect.

It also seems that yes. We might have to choose between supersampling and higher quality settings.
But at least we have a choice. With the 980ti in my efforts for 90fps I couldn't have either.

I'm also suspecting my z97 chipset and CPU/RAM is somewhat holding me back a little.
So I am very tempted to build a new system but me and especially bank account is torn.

I went from a 980 to a 1080ti. The difference in ED was more about smoothness and a few settings amped up than PD. I would say the jump from a 980ti would be noticeable but not earth shattering. The ability to run most native VR titles at PD 2 is a joy, however.

I also went from 980ti to 1080ti and I'm pleased with the improvements. (Both are the Zotac Amp Extreme)
Even with overclocking one of the fastest cards money can buy, I can't get 90 fps AND crystal clear graphics in all game situations, so set your expectations accordingly.

I prioritize graphics quality over frame-rate. My frame rates are 90 in space, 75-90 in rings, 45-60 on planet surfaces, and 45 in stations.
My setting on the 980ti were 1.5 in the debug tool, 2.0 HMD in game and x0.5 SS. Shadow/material/texture qualities were low.
With the 1080ti I can use 2.0 in the debug tool, 2.0 HMD in game and x0.5 SS. All quality settings are high or ultra.

But as I mentioned, I have an overclocked high-end 1080ti. Your results may vary.

Smoothness is my biggest deal. I could get the 980ti looking good to where I was happy but the judder in stations and on planets was super annoying. I just picked up an Aorus 1080ti. I'll give it a run tonight and post my thoughts tomorrow.

What do you mean by PD and 'PD 2'?

Apologies for the thread hijack, but I've just jumped from an R9 290 to a 1080ti and I'm trying to establish the VR sweet spot for my new card.

Based on the discussion above, for a 1080ti it seems to be - SS at 1x, HMD Qality 1.25x, Ambient Occlusion toned down, and the rest at max.

I use ED Profiler, so will try out ultra settings tweaked to the above. I've also only got an 'adequate' cpu. But I'd be interested n peoples tips re. settings fr a 1080ti.

Since I just made a screenshot of my settings (in order to copy them over to a second account), here's what I am using on a regular 1080:

Here's the settings I'm currently running.

z97 chipset, I7 4790k, 16GB 2400Mhz RAM, and 1080ti.
It's 90% of the time at 90fps from what I can tell, but last night it was good.
I do sometimes see a jerk, but that could be something non card related, and not really that much tied into settings.

Damn, as a very interested but currently non VR gamer it sounds like you need to be some kind of visual effects engineer to get these bits of kit up and running.

I was hoping that the upcoming Xbox One X was going to jump into this market with a plug and play device but as per their recent announcement at E3 that is not going to happen. The PS4 pro VR sounds OK but not on a graphic level of the Rift or Vive.

I think whenever I decide to go for it I'm just going to have to buy a specialist high end PC specifically for VR but I think if I'm going to do that it will be worth waiting for the 2nd generation of Rift or Vive whenever that happens in the future.

Pulled the trigger on a Asus strix 1080 ti OC and relative EKWB full water block and backplate. U fortunately I will have to wait two months before playing with it, at the end of my work shift abroad.

What do you mean by PD and 'PD 2'?

Yes, I meant Pixel Density. In Elite it is the HMD setting. In some games there is a setting. In others you still need the debug tool to set it. At PD 2, running The Climb, is really sublime, if you'll pardon the rhyme.
