General / Off-Topic A 30 year old question I can finally (maybe) get an answer to

30 years ago, I played Elite on the Spectrum 48k+ and I had so much fun with that game.

However, whenever I reached Deadly, I would get wave after wave of about 5 small ships attacking me, even in Corporate systems. I could usually fight off two or three waves, but I was eventually overwhelmed. As you can imagine, this was not particularly enjoyable and I moved onto other things.

So, the question I couldn't answer at the time, is; Was that a known bug in all versions, just the Speccy version, or a bug in my particular copy? Or even working as planned?

sounds like a bug to me unless you upset the cops, which could be the reason as they had the small ships.

I played on BBC B and Cmdr64 and never had that, unless I deserved it!

Sounds like a case of simply be overwhelm by the might of the establishment frankly.

It seems to be a perennial rule that the bosses always win. Presumably that will be the same in 1000 years.

Someone hated you... I had a ZX too, never had the problem... even managed to reach deadly.
However, this time fate has clobbered me... I am a mac user.. desperately waiting....

Is that when they started to go invisible too ?

If you think that was hard, try playing Sundog The Frozen Legacy as that had ships only one pixel in size, and brown coloured on a black background, talk about hard to hit !

One of the few games I battled on with and didn't cheat at all, same with Elite getting to Elite.

I did cheat on a Commodore PET D&D clone though, rewrote the code to give me 999,999 gold.. (Now if only I could remember the name of the game!)

At least this Elite didn't come with a Lenslock, wasn't that fun..
