It doesn't seem that your ship was killed on the pad.
Only attacked.
And when you logged back in you were sent to jail pretty much the same way as if you turned yourself in - so not destroyed, but jailed only
The rebuy screen and the jail screed look quite similar

I was still alive when I logged off, but when I logged on, I was in the detention centre minus all bounty vouchers and astronomical data, so I was definitely killed. A salient fact is that I had no bounty on me, nor had I any outstanding fines, so nothing to hand myself in for. I've no idea why the NPC thought I was a criminal. it must have been a case of mistaken identity. I didn't get any rebuy or jail screen. I logged on to find myself in a completely different location with no record of how I got there.
