A big sun is in my way!!

Hello,

I have a situation that seems to occur too many times, and would like some advice.

Sometimes, I exit hyper jump into a system, on the way to another system, and a big sun is in front of me. My destination is too close to the sun (proximity alert) or sometimes on the other side of the sun.

How is the best way to get to my destination in a situation like this?

Thanks in advance

If you're looking to hyperspace to another system then at the moment range isn't an issue - you can jump direct at will and don't need to travel to intermediate systems.

Otherwise the thing to do is supercruise away from the sun until it no longer blocks the destination you want to reach (works whether this is an in-system POI or another system you want to hyperspace to).

Part one - throttle to nil while in hyperspace

Part two - upon exiting hyperspace pitch so the star is not in front of you, but behind you. Now while you get your bearings you are not going to get mass locked by it.

Part three - fly in an arc avoiding the sun. If your target is behind it, keep the star in the top of your canopy (above you) as you cruise around it.

Part four - experiment to find faster methods that work for you.

At the moment there is no point in jumping to intermediary systems. Every system can be jumped to directly...

If you mean your destination in the system is on the other side of the system's star then you just have to fly around it. It is a small pain but really doesn't add much to your super-cruise time.

If you are on or near a collision course with the star (or it's 'gravity well') then a yellow HUD ring will appear around said star. Be sure your nose is always pointing (just) outside this ring and you will plot a nice short course around the star without dropping out of super-cruise.

Hope that helps :)

Just a minor point. You come out of hyperspace with your navigation system locked on to that star. You need to select the station and lock onto it or you can end up trying to fly around the sun and then going back to the correct compass heading that is still the middle of the sun.

I have done this !

The simple answer is to take a bit of a detour. Just point your ship away from the star, planet or whatever other massive object is causing a problem. You only really need to turn by around 90 degrees. Let the speed build up for a few seconds and then try and get back on target. It usually works out quicker than taking the more direct but problematic route.

So, pulling all the bits of this thread together:

1. You can set you throttle to 0 in hyperspace, or leave it on full and simply turn away from the star quickly when you exit hyperspace.

2. You are now in supercruise mode (as you have not suffered an emergency stop)... OR, you failed number 1, above, and did suffer an emergency stop, in which case just turn away from star, throttle up and enter supercruise.

3. You now need to select your new destination target. For example, a station in the system you have just arrived in.

4. Turn to face the new compass setting (little circle, with target as yellow rectangle, above right of throttle graphic on HUD) of your in-system target.

5. If you start turning back towards the star too much, in order to aim at your new target, stop turning and let supercruise accelerate a little, then continue your turn, avoiding the star and its gravity well (which can slow down supercruise a lot, even if you avoid an emergency stop).

TIP: Making the turn around gravity wells (like stars and planets) in supercruise is easier if you turn by pitching up, as you can look up to see if the celestial body is coming into view, and hold it at a certain orientation while you curve around said body. The light from the star on your dash also gives a good cue as to whether you are nearing the star again (as well as the proximity alerts).

As soon as you enter a new system (from HyperDrive), I've found that you are pointing at the sun.

- So as soon as you exit Hyperdive, turn your ship away from the sun.

- You will be in SuperCruse mode, so slow down a little.

- Access your Navigation tab, and lock on to your required destination.

- Then use your compass (circle to the top right of radar) to aim at your destination.

- If the sun is in the way, you will have to pilot in a large arc around it.

- SuperCruise to your destination.
