A big Thank You to the whole Frontier Developments' staff and the community!

Dear Frontier Developments-staff,
I am now playing Elite Dangerous since April 2018, now have ca. 7,500 hours of in-game time, and I think it's more than overdue to say thank you for all your great work! I have never been as fascinated by a game as I am by Elite Dangerous.
Also, with the trouble of e.g. bugs kept in mind, I still say: According to my opinion, Elite Dangerous is one of the top games among the MMOs. Even if it might be not as well-known as the (old) big titles.
I guess some readers now think I am just over-glorifying. No, I am not. It is my honest opinion. There might be issues, but all in all it's a great game from my Point of View.

And here are some reasons why, split into "categories":

The Gameplay
I think I don't have to list all the general types of gameplay. May it be trading, mining, combat or exploring, Elite Dangerous offers everything I want.
In the past years, I have played many ways to play the game. I started with exploring, spending roughly 1.5 years with it. Then I got "consumed" by the BGS, which is still for me one of the most interesting features of the game. Because the BGS combines many of the general "gameplay-types" it is never boring for me.
If I want to go mining, I go mining and store the "mining-products" on my Fleet Carrier for further usage in our BGS.
If I want to fight, I have even more opportunities: Bounty Hunting, Combat Zones, ground as well space. Everything is there.
If I want to explore, I go out and explore. The data can also be used for BGS. Win-Win.
Trading? Well, same answer.
With the release of Odyssey there are even more new mechanics. Also, with the trouble we have with instances, missions and so on kept in mind, it still is a great addition for the game from my Point of View.
At this point: I am sorry for the many console-players who will not get access in the near future to Odyssey. But I still have the feeling that there is the chance that you get it too. Time will tell.

The Community
I think I have to say thank you to many of the squadrons, organizations, groups etc. too. Without a community, it's kinda hard to get a foothold.
Also, organizations/groups like the Fuelrats (which I didn't need to call yet, tbh.), Hullseals and various other player-run "services" are important to mention. Spending own, free time to help at such a large scale other players is really awesome.

Also, even if sometimes more activity is wished, I definitely have to say thank you to the Community Managers of Frontier Developments too!
You really make a good job and, to be honest, I am impressed how patiently you deal with "the louder, 'grumbling' parts" of the community.

The support of 3rd-party-tools and developers
Is it hard to believe that Elite Dangerous and the possibility of developing third-party-tools actually made me start learning software-development/programming in C#, Java, Javascript etc.? Well, the story is true.
I was already interested in software-development before, but thanks to Elite Dangerous, I started to learn software-development on my own. Btw. in 6 weeks I finish the 13th year of school in Germany and start studying Information Technology.
I don't want to say that it's all because of Elite Dangerous, but because of the game and the opportunities for 3rd-party-developers I discovered my passion for software development.

Combining a practical, "educational" part with something like a game in my free time is something I really love.

And...?
And there are so many more aspects of the game and community I can mention. But I want to not make this text too "voluminous".

To say it with only two words:
Thank you!
Thank you to Frontier Developments and the community!

Elite 1984 was one of the original inspirations for me to learn how to program and led me to a career in information technology (I didn't actually become a professional programmer/developer but that is okay). This is great to hear legacy continues to inspire and that 38 years later I can still play the game :) Almost all of the things me and my friends imaged could be in the game are now reality (virtually), it's like frontier interviewed me somehow and just made the game I wanted. Amazing job and big THANK YOU as well, I can't wait to see what the next Elite looks like one day!

I am not sure Elite is at the top of MMOs given the much more popular behemoths out there. But unless I am mistaken it is actually the first one to offer MMO gameplay from a first person cockpit simulation experience. And it is also indeed ever present at most of the usual top space games lists out there.

Yeah, you are more precise :)(y)

I used to buy cosmetics / arx after each patch to say thank you.

The benefit of hindsight says it would have been equally profitable to hold back / be polite and not buy anything and just press "Like" on the patch notes.

you've averaged at least 5 hours per day, everyday, for 4 years. Jesus ... How ...

I think that is more hours than I have got in all of my games total.

Some of us have more time to play games than others... (I certainly can, and do, play games (as well as ED) quite a lot, although I do only have around 6,000 hours in ED, with over 1,000 of those since EDO arrived!)
Back when i was mad for the game, thru bgs, i spent a a lot of time balancing worklife with gaming.
There was a cost, so i don't recommend it but at the time, when i had to shift thru 12 hours repeatedly it made sense because i needed money or be with the street ppl..
Nasty though, i have to take meds every day now and if it wasn't this game, it would have been another because i had to balance my sleep.
Playing a game .20-24 hours takes its toll, when you're so ramped up with caffiiene and sugar because your sleep pattern is constantly interupted thru work, your body can't handle it, and doesn't know when to switch off or on..
Bad job,. Not doing that again.
You can do it but i don't know what wrecked me so i'd be wary.

Yea, thanks Fdev!
Been playing since January 2016, on xbox a few months before horizons dropped. Elite was the primary purpose for me purchasing an xbox, since this was back in high school, and didn't have the money or time to build a full gaming rig. I played it almost religiously since, amounting to nearly 16-17 weeks worth of playtime since then.

And then I get the news that all future development on consoles has been canceled, and there's no way for me to transfer my console cmdr to pc, effectively dooming my entire account and motivation to boot up the game again.
Yea, thanks Fdev...

The only game I've clocked more hours in than Elite:Dangerous is Destiny 2. I usually switch back and forth between the 2 games when I get burnt out from the other.

Flying through space just feels so...epic. It still takes my breath away. Few games can hold my attention for as long as both these 2 have.

I played this too for a while. But it never came close...
well, I didn't say it was better. I would hope a game that started development 10 years after VO was released would be a vastly superior product.

But VO is most certainly an example of a game squarely in the same genre as Elite dangerous is. Closer than most other examples. You got first person cockpit twitch based space ship flying, trading, mining roids (salvaging loot from battles), combat (npc and pvp). It's MMO, with open world sandbox gameplay, missions and community events, "squadrons" and something a bit akin to powerplay.
