A bit early for a petition, but for Europa in Horizons could you....

Why wouldn't you be able to land there (other than role playing being in the Space Odyssey universe?). There's even a video of David Braben landing on Europa released yesterday - it's pretty safe to say that you'll be able to set down on it in Horizons.

I'd also be careful of putting easter eggs everywhere. It's bad enough they let a station be named after a youtube "celebrity" (and don't get me wrong, Obsidian Ant seems like a nice guy and I enjoy his videos), but if you start putting out of universe easter egg stuff everywhere you run the risk of seriously messing up immersion. After that it's easy to have a station called Utopia Planitia on Mars that builds big ships, a federation flagship called Enterprise, and while we're at it why not have the Tardis appear ultra rarely to players? I'd be against all of these ideas, myself, and focus more on developing the original Elite universe.

I know your idea is more subdued than some of these examples - it's just a station name as a reference to 2063 - but my point is that if they said yes to every player requested easter egg like that, soon we'd be up to our neck in out of universe references.

Seeing how David is a fan of Mr Clarke's work, I would a bit surprised if Tsien WASN'T a station on Europa.

Have you actually played the game much, been around any at all, seen the names of stations, stars and even planets that Kickstarter backers got to give names to? I mean, seriously, have you? I ask because if you HAD been around the bubble a bit, you'd realize that your point is totally pointless.

I actually have played the game for quite a while and I can't say I'm a fan of many of those choices. I know full well we have stations like George Lucas or Ridley Scott, and regardless of my opinion of those directors, I think naming giant cities in space after them is silly. It's what's called an opinion, and I was expressing it in a civil manner. Now how about you take a deep breath, calm down, and debate things in a way that isn't rude? Just another opinion on how one should conduct himself when talking to others.

Ok, you haven't gotten around much of the bubble obviously, if you think George Lucas and Ridley Scott are the worst unsuitable names out there....yeah, not even close man, like, you've landed at Polaris while aiming for Sol off target. GAMERS gave names to the stations, stars, and planets in the game, and that means gamer names....we see NPCs named that way as well, surely you haven't missed that?

And no one has asked for an easter egg, this is a request for a station on Europa to be named Tsien, from a piece of science fiction that the creator of the game is a fan of. This is not a request to name some little moon of a planet around some star out in the hinterlands after David Braben's dog, THAT is an easter egg.

Funny how you automagically assume I'm emotional for some reason, are you upset or something? I'm sitting here on a saturday morning, listening to some music, drinking some coffee, my god sleeping in my lap after his morning walk, rather relaxed and in a good mood. I simply pointed out that you seemed to not have much experience with the game if you think the OP's request is an easter egg and out of place in this game.

Have fun reading on this glorious saturday afternoon! As for assuming you being emotional, re-read your post and see how the tone comes off as. There are nicer ways to disagree with someone rather than assuming they have no experience to know what they're talking about and assuming their arguments are pointless. If you think that's a calm discussion, may I suggest that maybe you indulged a little too much in that coffee you are so fond of. I like coffee too, but if you overdo it it can make you a bit high strung, y'know? But perhaps I could assume here that you haven't actually lived long enough to know that and call you a kid? Or maybe that'd be a bit rude and assuming too much? I'll let you decide :)

I've been playing Elite Dangerous for around 6 months. Been around the bubble quite a lot, though I will admit that the last month and a half have been spent exploring. I think that's enough to see a lot of the bubble, and what I listed before are just examples, many more could be listed. In the end, there's no right or wrong here because the acceptable level of influence from out-of-universe works of fiction that you want inside your own universe is not something set in stone, but rather down to personal taste. To me gamer names are a poor excuse and in my opinion, landing at George Lucas station is just as immersion breaking as killing Vladimir Putin or Aeryn Sun. It's silly, and you shouldn't let your game be designed by the general populace. Obviously our opinions differ here, and that's fine. I just prefer a civil tone when talking about it, or not talking about it at all.

To answer your question, no I am not upset, but I am really tired of people who storm into a discussion with a very confrontational tone and then claim they're all calm and try to pin the aggressive tone on the other side. I've just seen it too many times to be impressed, but I guess that's what the ignore function is for.

Again, have a lovely Saturday and enjoy your coffee - just not too much, if you'll take my advice :)

Frankly I disagree, I find it more realistic that humans would name their things after pop culture and history. As long as it's just names. The game does take place 1000 years in the future after all, all of RL could have happened in the past. Consider that some of the innocuous names you've seen may actually be historical or pop culture references from 500 years in the future according to us.

Instead of naming places after fictional characters.....they should consider naming stations, moons and planets after real life pioneers...the first astronauts that actually did something in history.

Like Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldren, Edwin Mitchell and famous Russian Astronauts.
You would think these are the type of people that history would look back at.

It's been a while since I read the books but didn't they land on Europa in 3001? I think it had plant like life that came from the water under the ice.

I could, of course, be completely wrong!

This is absolute nonsense. If you didn't know who Obsidian Ant was you'd have absolutely no idea that Obsidian Orbital was even named after someone. Obsidian Orbital is otherwise a completely generic name and one I would 100% expect any 400-billion-system-procedurally-generated-universe to contain.

You're acting like it was named "Obsidian Ant Like That Guy On YouTube Station".

Am I the only one surprised that your GOD had morning walk and then he was sleeping on your lap?:D

That's quite the relationship you have with God, there... What faith is that?

*edit - darn... beaten to it while posting...by a whole 20 minutes.
