A bit of extra customization would (probably) go a long way...

I think ED has the most expensive in-game visual tweaks ever. Not only is the game a fully priced title, but things like basic colors for ships are sold separately (let alone complete skins).

Be honest here, FD, how much time and effort does it take to make a "vibrant colors pack" for any given ship? I'd wager very little, to none at all.

And to make matters worse, you don't just sell the "vibrant colors pack" - you sell a "vibrant colors pack for ship XYZ", which means one would need to, indeed, spend quite a bit of money to actually be able to add some color and variety to all of their ships.

Now, I realize that the store is a way for you guys to make extra money and it's for people to show support. But the perceived work required / value to price ratio for some of the skins seems abysmal (cue in the color packs). Actual skins? Superb. Decals? Awesome. Bobbleheads? Yes please. All those things seem to require at least a bit of effort on your part, FD (now we're just missing the fluffy dice :p ).

The color packs, on the other hand, really ought to be free - this would add a bit of extra variety and spice to the galaxy for everyone.

Compare ED to, say, Warframe - a F2P game where visual customization is one of THE main ways the developers of that game make money. And you know what? Basic color customization is available from the start.

PS. Before someone claims that I'm asking for something for free - I actually bought some skis and skin packs. I just feel like the basic color pack should really be available from the get-go.

Sorry Shaamaan, agree with a lot you postings, but this time your post is Pish, Simply disagree with you this time...Sorry!

My opinion is that they should of textured the ships with a RGB and made them customizable with slider. EG like the custom characters they are adding, as the engine can do it. Maybe it will come later down the line, as it wasn't a priority. Also if they wanted to make money of the skins they could always add designs to be purchased.

Simply going to disagree. I feel like it would stop a lot of their income from paint packs.

On one hand I sympathize and agree... on the other it's like I wrote - the value / price for color packs is abysmal, and then I realize that a F2P game, where a large chunk of profits comes directly from selling visual customization, can offer basic things like colors for free and still comes out on top.

No need to be sorry. :p I would, however, like to know a bit more about why you disagree. Do you feel the value of color packs is OK? Or is it OK purely because skins, on the whole, should be treated as an extra way to support FD and as such, shouldn't be expected to be fairly priced?

Fully agree with Shaamaan. Variety is the lifeblood of MMO's where grinding and repetitive actions are the norm.
I too expected base colours to be free with more interesting skins being charged for, I too have spend some money in the store so FD have got more money out of me but would support this type of thing being implemented.

To be honest I'd quite like for the store to sell skin patterns and we are allowed to apply colours ourself like the old Need for Speed games where you selected Triple stripe option on the paintjob then selected say black as colour 1 for the base car and red as colour 2 for the outside stripe and Yellow for colour 3 being the inner stripe.

Would allow endless possibilities and would mean I'd spend a hell of a lot more time and money on the store and in the outfitting screen :p

Well I agree that the packs should be for every ship rather than per ship, and I would also like the quality to be higher and more than just a flat color.

however not to discredit your post or to take away from it in any way go play some Mechwarrior Online and see the real ripoff racket going on.
Imagine having to pay real money to store each ship, with at least three versions of each ship being availible.
Hero mechs that earn you more money costs around $25 each.
want a better version of a heatsync yeah one time use and real money to buy.
paint patterns? Around $20 each per mech
paints to apply to them per paint $5-$15 per color and you can have three colors on a mech.
on top of that they have a star citizen like pre order scheme for every new mech that comes out. Upwards of $90. There was even one that was $500 and it was gold, that's it, limited edition gold.

comparitively FD aren't doing so bad, not great and not very high on the quality but comparitively not bad.

In other mmo you can see your character in ed you don´t 90% of time. Also new 60€ games have micro transactions halo 5/assassins creed.... Only way to make them go away is to not buy them. And that isn´t going to happen as skins sell so well. At least in ed you can´t buy boosts or ships/modules.

Times of free visual customization are in past.

Well, if you compare "down", then you're right. The Mechwarrior example you posted sounds terrible!

But I think one should compare "up", to strive for better things... Try some Warframe - it's free! :p

Personally, IMHO, you have actually answered your own question :) Yes i do feel the packs are spot on with the pricing model. Yes i do think that FD should get an alternative income from within the game. There is no pressure to buy the skins, maybe peer pressure if your in a wing of Yellow colored ships and you have a plain vanilla ship, it is buy them or don't buy them.

I have all my current flying ships (I have lots parked and not skinned up) skinned up (Look out for the Banana colored ones (Except my Gold Conda).

If it keeps the lights on in FD, or it allows for extra hamsters to drive the server wheels, or an extra developer to be hired to solve the bugs quicker, then i am in favor of paying for Skins and other things within the game.

This is of course IMHO ;)

Hello there

I was just posting in another thread about customisation.

Now, I realise that skins are an income stream but id pay a good tenner for the ability to paint my own skin/texture on a single ship.

The available skins just don't move me emotionally. That said I've bought a few.

Please don't make the excuse that it's too complex for the user, let us be the judge of whether we can handle scarily unwrapped meshes or weird conversion tools.

I'd be happy even if only I can see em locally.

If its too complex for FD, as sometimes things that seem *easy*to implement to us players can often be hideously hard to implement for the devs, then let us know.

We will be gentle.

Need to colour that HUD properly too.

Common FD, give us lovely customisation tools! It's almost Xmas! It's not like yer doing anything else at the moment is it? ;)

Rgds

For color variants, I think ED should provide a few more "basic" color variants for free so that players can get some taste of customizing the ship. Special colors like gold is perfectly fine putting into the store.

After that, ED should design A LOT MORE special pattern (livery) skins like the Cobra Onionhead livery, it's a good start and I think ED should put in MUCH more efforts in special livery direction if they plan to sell skins. Just minor color changes for skins and ask for the current price is a little bit too much TBH.

Bobblehead is a BIG YES and I hope ED could make more bobblehead and other interesting cockpit decoration options.

Vanity are extras in most games, god they even had them in last Tomb Raider.

They are NOT asking you to buy them, and personally I think they are a waste of time (Both for players and ED).
And yes Mech Warrior Online top's my list of dumb ways to sell cockpit items, more coming soon(TM) to ED.

Just to emphasize - this is what I had in mind with my original post.

I realize some color patterns might be restricted. But the basic colors (like those available in the vibrant color packs) seem pretty darn "standard".

This remembers me on times buying a car.

As standard color pack for free I got 'White'.
Every other colors started several 100 Euros upwards.
So if we believe those ships being the cars of the game, everything
is ok with it.

Nevertheless I would appreciate some configuration opportunities.
e.g:
Writing the name of the ship on the ship.
Badging it with my pledge or my military ranking (or some jouney stickers (SagA*)).
Adjusting Hud colors (maybe depending on situation (HUD getting red if in combat)).

Regards,
Miklos

I think you are missing his point.

i appreciate the non intrusive, totally optional, format used by Fd regarding their store. in an era where micro transactions seem to be of far greater importance to the developer than the game itself, ED is refreshingly different. They are clearly building 'the game' they want to play (not a financial platform around which to coerce as much money as they can from the player base) and we get to share in that journey.. for an initial price of course.

aside from the initial game/seasonal downloads, there are no financial expectations placed upon us to remain equal with others. they clearly have their minds set on what's important, and think its nice if we show our support by buying a paint job or 2, or mugs.. i do enjoy my morning tea in my Imperial Mug, and whilst a cup would be far preferable, i am still happy.

are there some paint jobs i would like to create for myself...? Yes!

would I like a custom colour palette tool in game...? Definitely!

do i understand why Fd haven't implemented such...? Kinda, but i'm sure they have reasons so i'm fine with things as they are.

Don't forget, we will be getting to create avatars soon, who knows what else we will get to be creative with.....
