A bit out of the loop: What's the current state of coop/squadron gameplay?

Hey fellow commanders, premium beta backer here but haven't played that much in beta 3 because I had less time and didn't want to invest it into the game with the upcoming wipes. You can see my question in the title and I'm basically asking because I have a friend who is on the fence and unsure if he should buy the game. We were wondering whether squadron gameplay is possible already or will be with the release of the game on Dec 16. Will we be able to fly together and stay together every time we leave SC or one of us is being interdicted? Is coop gameplay possible and functioning right now (even in gamma?) and if not does somebody know when it will be?

Could you or someone else go more into detail? Will we always end up in the same instance and will we meet each other when we try to exit SC at the same point in space or asteroid field?
