Newcomer / Intro A bunch of noob questions

Bought the game about a week ago, purchased a Saitek x-55. I am a very confused old man at this point and a simple solution is probably staring me in the face I just can't see it.

Ok my Saitek labels its buttons differently then Elite. So how do I know what numbers go with what buttons? I have also noticed my throttle numbers duplicate my joystick numbers. I hope this is normal for the x-55. I did do a search and found some similar questions but none that covered this topic. I am sorry if I duplicated a question asked many times.......

I don't have Saitek anything, but I can try to help...

I looked for someone doing the work for you. The goal is to end up with a layout and an image that points at buttons.

If you look at this:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21522&page=3

There are a couple near the top saying "here they are". One of them is for the first post of the thread (where the images showing the button layout is). There may be more of them in that thread, and you can pick the one that seems best to you.

What you find is a text file, if it is just the actual text, paste it in Notepad and save it. Make sure it is named something you will recognize in the game and not something generic "saitek" (to avoid later confusion). So call the text file for instance chaotic.binds (I use this here).

Where to put it? It is in "App Data", and on Windows 7 I find it in:
C:\Users\XXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

The XXXXX thing is my username. You may have to go to folder options (top left, Organize, Folder and Search options, View and turn on 'show hidden files, folders and drives' in order to see the AppData folder (it is hidden by default, I think).

If you are on Windows 8 it may be a bit different, so google "windows 8 app data" or something similar and look for a description. From "Local" and out it should be the same.

When you have dropped the file there, and start your game. Go to options/controllers. At the top you should find "chaotic" (or whatever you called it) so select it, and you got the chosen layout in the game. You can of course also modify the layout here or make your own from scratch.

So you should end up with an image of the layout used in the game. Getting used to it could take some time, I have just a few buttons on my cheap HOTAS, and it has taken me some time...

You can also go into options/controls in the pause menu. From there you can bind keys/buttons/switches till your hearts content. I have the same joystick and started with the default bindings and have just been changing them around as the need arises.

You can go to Devices and Printers under start menu, right clicking on your controller and go to 'Game controller settings' and then properties. There you have all your buttons listed as numbers so I guess you could just press a button and a number should light up. Not sure if they are labelled the same way as in Elite tho :)

I use a piece of paper, then go in the controls option and see which button corresponds to which number according to ED, and which function it controls then write that down.

I had the same issue as the original poster when I started out. I had a new hotas-X, and what went where was not obvious. The controller options page is a mile long, and not having played the game it is not obvious what the important stuff is.

So I did what I described and found a setup that looked sensible in the image, and used that one.

If starting from scratch, it probably helps with experience from similar games, at least.
