Hardware & Technical A cheap and simple HOTAS mount/support

o7 Commanders!

First of all I am relatively new on this forum, therefore I hope this didn't exist already (made a quick search and it seemed fine), if it does please feel free to delete this post.

So I recently bought a HOTAS setup for Elite (I was playing with keyboard and mouse in VR, pretty happy already), but didn't like the position of the devices on my desk since they were too high for me (and compared to the in-game avatar). Additionally my desk doesn't have much space, anyways...

Basically I wanted to get something like this:

Looks great, the problem: price :O

So I decided to build mine, with the following constraints:
- $20 max
- quick to build (1h max, including 45min to go to the shop (ok I'm exagerating a bit here but seriously buying the components is probably what takes most time))
- no "workshoping" skill required

And this is what I came up with (inspired from here):

It's very stable (the HOTAS are screwed on the plywood boards) while I also wanted the whole thing to be easily removable without tools (only there when I play, the rest of the time it's behind the pink bin, I don't want to look too nerdy when I invite people at my place [noob]).

Some more pictures to see better how it's built:

What you need:
- 6 L-shaped metal bars
- 2 160x210mm plywood boards
- a bit of any anti-scratch material you can find
- a few screws

In addition to that, I was missing some "central feedback" with the Thrustmaster throttle since I wanted to have the throttle as full range rather than forward only. I found a pretty nice thread on reddit mentioning the use of velcro for that, did the same here:

What you need:
- a simple sticky velcro

Overall I'm very happy with this final setup. If you have the same problem I had with the HOTAS being too high, this is definitely worth the time and effort [smile]

Fly safe commanders!

Good work, does it stay put under the forces of combat or is there a bit of drift on (or off!) the desk?

I like the velcro idea and will also try that on my FWCS.

Repped. It's actually quite simple!

Never thought to just use 90 degree angle brackets and reverse them together like that...

Think I'll use some melamine or laminate bookshelf instead of the plywood, however. :) Makes for a much nicer finish.

Thanks you! :)

Do not worry, it is stable enough so that you could do press-ups on them and the desk will move before they drift. More seriously (don't do press-ups on that) they "bite" quite strongly the desk as I measured the right spacing for the metal bars and then added the protective felt layer (which reduces the spacing by a millimeter or so).

I agree with the laminate bookshelf, it will be nicer (especially if the boards are larger and can be seen around the HOTAS).

Very nice indeed!
That expensive stuff is from Monstertech, right?
If anyone considers that...they just announced that they will be releasing new (and cheaper!) versions of those table mounts very soon.

Nice and simple!

You could also use one of these, giving you more options for different desks:

Yes I believe it's from them. A very nice mount but overkill for rather cheap HOTAS like the ones I have.

Exactly babelfisch! This is what I would have chosen if they were in the shop. I actually had to make new holes in two of the L-bars to make it fit perfectly my desk thickness. With the ones you suggested you won't have this problem. [up]

Oooh! Thats a great idea! I have a really small desk so this would be great. The only issue is my desk has a glass top!

Thanks guys (and girls), glad if it can be of any help to some of you! ;)

I have seen similar mounts on glass desks as well Nat, there were absolutely no problems so it might be worth a try.
