PvP A Coalition of the Willing Victim. Step forward Pirate Friendly Traders and speak.

Post the location and dates, tag your ships so I can see you aren't murder hobos, and come get mah booty! I don't promise to make it easy on you, might spar with y'all for a bit before handing the cargo over so I can get used to fighting real players. Getting RPirated was one of the coolest events I've had happen to me in Elite, really want more of it. And if the murderhobos come around, I'd be more than willing to help knock them around, bad for both parties' business after all.

Edited out an unintended emote

Now, here comes the first part where I expect a little of that respect to be returned - At this point I've no idea if I'm dealing with a pirate or a psycho. The very first thing I do after dropping to normal space is to open the range with a boost and run out the guns. If he's a psycho, not doing that is suicidal. If he's a pirate, well, he will see that I'm not actually opening fire and with the guns run out I can;t be charging my FSD so get a grip and don't take that initial boost as running. I promise you if I were doing that it would be a lot more obvious than a single boost. I'm not going to let you close the range until I know how this is going to play out.

If you talk, I'll talk back. We can negotiate. If you are demanding enough of me that my trip makes a loss, expect me to be a bit more hardheaded about it. You probably need to be as aware of trade conditions as I am to know where that line is, but you;re as much of a professional as I am so that's not hard, is it?

If you shoot, either I'm outta there or fight's on. I don't fly shieldless and while of course I won't be in a dedicated combat build if I'm hauling I'm very likely to be in a maxed multirole build with slightly better chances of tanking your fire long enough to depart or of inflicting enough damage on you that your repair costs will eat all the profit from anything I might drop. You can probably take me, but it will cost you.

On the other hand, if we come to an agreement, then you're just a cost of doing business and you'll likely be out of there undamaged with a little profit in your holds. All it takes it a little pragmatism on both sides. I know I've got that so it's all on you, Mr Pirate....
Although I found this thread on a search for advice on cargo scooping, as I seem to have a problem with it that I didn't have before... sorry, irrelevant... I didn't weigh in initially because to be honest I'm not generally up for being pirated and I didn't want to rain on the parade.

But I saw Dave's summary here, and if only for devilment, wanted to offer mine.

Assuming I'm in Open and have been successfully interdicted, I too have no idea if I'm dealing with a pirate or a psycho, so my approach will be as follows:

If you talk, I'll boost. Boost again. Boost. Boost. Boost again. Try the FSD. Boost. Hope the shields hold. Try the FSD again. Boost. Hope the shields hold. Then, either A) jump out of there; or B) explode in a ball of fire.

If you shoot, go direct to B) above. I don't fly shieldless but my shields are usually crap and I won't be in a competent combat build, and I couldn't hit the USS Nimitz at four paces. You can undoubtedly take me, and it won't cost you a credit as long as you're using energy weapons. Missiles might set you back a fiver or so.

There. Now you're prepared should you face me in battle. Good... well, luck doesn't really come into it. Good shooting, I guess? :p

Ill take the third option : C) Open fire, skilfully disable drives and have a friendly chat while emptying your hold. Its nice to be nice! No need for all that ball of fire melodrama. We only kill the bad ones after all.

Protip to all pirates wishing to engage in dialog with your marks: when you're being fired at, the last place you look is the top left of the screen where the comms panel is (you know, in the opposite end of the screen to where you're frantically staring at your rapidly dwindling shields and your glacially growing boost bar). If your target doesn't respond, don't assume you're being deliberately ignored.

Pro tip to all Traders: When you've been interdicted and are being shot at while trying to escape, Check your Comms panel to see if its a Pirate.

Protip: When being attacked, jump up in the air shouting "Help, help, i'm being opressed! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!"

I'm game for people trying, but frankly your odds of success are terrible.

And given that I can't tell the difference between "legit pirates" and your garden-variety murderhobo (much more common by a factor of 10) until it's too late, I'm going to be pretty paranoid most of the time and rabbit out of there.

Depends on my mood, how I want to play and whether I’m playing against people.

But yes some piracy is fun although I will do everything in my power short of CLogging to evade and escape, and accept the consequences if I fail.

I’ve never experienced repeated endless attempts though and will normally just avoid a system if I find it is being actively hunted.

There are not many reasons to make a system a must visit location. BGS needs maybe but greed isn’t one, plenty of credits to earn elsewhere.
