A couple of quick questions

I decided to do some mining for materials I needed for engineering and I noticed something new. As I approached the planet I activated my scanner and some sort of a probe launched toward the planet. Previously in my few attempts at landing on a planet I just tried to land in a crater and started mining. After the probe hit the planet an area of the planet turned blue. Is that simply for optics - it was pretty cool to watch - or is there some additional information I can derive from the probe?

Second question - I traveled to Colonia without unlocking the requirements to get Etienne Dorn. As I was mining this planet I came upon some sentries protecting some pods. I picked up a couple pods and returned them to my ship and looked at the pods in my inventory. It directed me to Dorn's location. Would it be worthwhile to take these pods to Dorn or would it be a waste of time?

Sounds like you have activated the Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS): https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Detailed_Surface_Scanner - this is used to map planets up to 100% and increase the reward you get from scanning them in the first place.

I suppose for the second question, it depends on if you need the money or not.
Regarding the engineer I was trying to figure out if there was a workaround to having to return to the bubble to unlock him by just picking up the pods.

I like your avatar. I played the original in the early days on obsolete computers. The game has come a long way from the stick figures of the original.

If you need to unlock Etienne Dorn, then yes, you should collect similar escape pods and bring them to the engineer.

Thanks - I played the original as well back in '85 on a C64. It opened a whole new world for me in computer games, since I had never encountered a game in which you could save your progress and then continue later, nor a game where you could buy upgrades etc. I might upgrade my avatar with an image of the Krait Phantom in addition to the Krait / Krait Mk II I have now.

Map the planet 100% and get access to its geological sites. The mats you seek will be concentrated at those sites.

If you want to unlock Dorn, the simplest way to do it is to go and bother a megaship in the Colonia region, collect the escape pods and deliver them to him.
I forget where, exactly, a suitable megaship can be found but I'm sure somebody can provide that info'.

If you haven't unlocked Liz Ryder and ranked-up with her in order to get the invite from Dorn, however, you'll be wasting your time collecting escape-pods 'cos the engineers don't like it when you show up uninvited.
