A disturbing trend amongst our younger imperial commanders.

It is with sadness that I have noticed an increasing number of the more junior imperial commanders behaving in an
act that I can only hope is from ignorance of tradition and lack of proper training. To whit, entering stations upside down.

As all commanders would remember from basic training you enter or exit a station on the side with the green light. Thankfully
at least this has not been forgotten. However what some are ignoring is that it is proper and traditional to keep the light on
your left hand side while doing so. To do otherwise leaves you in the foolish position of entering the station upside down. An
act which I think you will agree is to be discouraged as it generates the impression of a commander who is either ignorant or willfully
disrespectful.

Of course such an attitude is to be expect from federation pilots, they lack the cultural heritage to realise their mistakes, however
for the commanders from the civilised systems, I and I'm sure many others, will agree that common sense and heritage should
prevail and the phrase "light to left is doubly blest" should be the common refrain taught in flight school.

I concur even in space

"Currently, Cygnus spacecraft, which are unmanned transport vessels designed for cargo transport to the International Space Station, utilize a navigational lighting system consisting of five flashing high power LED lights. The Cygnus displays a flashing red light on the port side of the vessel, a flashing green on the starboard side of the vessel, two flashing white lights on the top and one flashing yellow on the bottom side of the fuselage."

That would be Sarah, buy her some cookies :)
She added it recently to the AI, because that's what players was doing.

Yes, but it wasn't Sarah.

This was before she did this. The original reason for the lights was to help align to the "up" in the station so that the landing pad locations are consistent on approach.

I can't remember who it was but I remember it clearly.

Regarding "up" I don't know, first I hear of it but that's no indication of anything. Sounds reasonably. :)
The alignment of ships using the lights instead of going in through the middle was added recently to the AI, I can find the post if you want. Quite sure Sarah replied to a thread pointing it out.

Green lights are for working out which way is "up". "Up" in this situation means the frame of reference for the way the pads are numbered within the station.

They are not for working out which side of the slot to line up on - that idea is a player invention, and also pretty impossible to acheive in the bigger ships that more or less fill the slot.

There is no upside down in space. :D

Right up until the point you realize you need the heat shield to be facing "down"

There are Red lights around three of the four sides.

& the ones in the middle are red on both side, going in or out.

Does that mean there needs to be a middle lane perpetually empty

Might be hard on those not tiny ships.

Since there are light surrounding the docking port in the station, I am going to keep the the belief they are navigation lights, not traffic lights, AI docking improvement not withstanding
Especially in the dark, this station is till in the light, casting its own shadow, gets a lot darker.

I believe the original purpose of the lights was to show orientation to the docking bay, however Sarah added the behaviour of keeping to the green side to the AI in the last patch. Net effect is that if you keep to the green side you miss AI traffic, which is a result for both camps. :)

Which would be correct if we were talking about navigation lights. However the lights around the entrance to a station are more like port bouys or lateral marks. For those there are 2 standards according to wikipedia.
And in neither case does it talk about which way up your boat should be :)

I always keep to the green side ,but always enter so my pad will be below me for ease of landing. Right or left doesn't matter just keep to the green side. In my opinion .

Sorry I was disagreeing with your assertion
