A few newcomer problems.

First of all I'd just like to say hello. Hello. :)

Now my first problem is thus, I started the solo game yesterday after spending some time in the training area. I left Trevithick initially to drop some cargo off at another station, had no idea how to drop the cargo off and ended up jettisoning the cargo. I then could not navigate back to Trevithick, I then got attacked by some dude called Sammy something, two federation dudes came and helped me attack him back, I then left them to it. However I now have a fine to pay. I then thought I'd start again so I self destructed. Again I started on Trevithick and took on a contract of dropping some Bertrandite off to Volta Station- Kremainn, however I have no idea where this is, no way of supercruising, and I don't fancy searching through billions of stars for it. So I got to look at another station, Worldwide I think it's called in the LHS 3447 area, I just float by it, no way of communicating or asking permission to land, not even a docking, it is merely a tiny dot I keep flying past.
So back to Trevithick I go, it lets me supercruise close to it using the escape vector. I then find myself 26ls away and no way of getting my engines past three bars of speed. All landing, scoops and hardpoints are disabled. Finally it lets me cruise at a decent speed until I float past the place again, it is also a mere dot on the screen that I keep flying past. No way of communication or gaining permission to land.

Can anyone shed any light on the issue, is it me being useless or some foibles with the game?.

Thanks in advance, Mikey

Hi there.

I think it's just a case of a little further pilot training is required. Can I ask if you have completed all the training simulations? There are training simulations that train you on jumping between systems, docking, super cruising as well as dog fighting. These are really worth doing to learn the basics of the game.

I think the tutorials will help you with 99% of the issues you are having.

One thing you need to do when super cruising is slow down when approaching your target station. You then press the key to exit super cruise when you see the "safe to disengage" message. This will drop you out of super cruise safely and you will be at your destination station. Once close to the station, you need to enter in to your comms menu (3rd menu on the left hand side panel) and select the station and choose request docking permission. You will get a response from the station to say cleared or denied (if the dock is full). All this is detailed in the training simulations, so you should be able to get all the answer from those.

I would also suggest watching some "how to" youtube videos that people have created. Many of which can be found in the forums here at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=77

There are manuals in this section too that would be worth having a look at.

I hope this helps, but if you have any more questions just ask. The community here is very helpful.

Fly safe commander.

Have you tried the training missions? The last couple explain (somewhat) the principles of travel, and docking.

The first issue you had was dropping the cargo at the station... Were you just buying/selling, or was it a mission? If buying selling, dock, open up starport services, select commodities, then sell.

If on a mission, you'll need to dock then go to the bulletin board, here you should be able to drop your cargo off for the mission.

As for finding that Volta Station, you'll need to open up the Galaxy map (not the system map) here you should be able to find Kremainn (should be within a couple of jumps), plot route, select your point (either Kremainn or an intermediate point if you have one), exit the map then look for your target point... Look to the upper left of your scanner, you'll see a small scanner with a blue dot... If its a small blue circle the target point is behind you, if its solid it should be somewhere in front of you. With the target lined up, fire up your FSD in hyperdrive mode and it should take you to that system.

Once there, open the system map and target the station you're after, exit map and find target, throttle up and engage FSD this time in supercruise mode, try to keep throttle in the blue segment (bar to right of scanner), as the time-to-target counts down (0.07) start slowing until you get the "safe" message then disengage the FSD, and you should drop out by the station. If you find you can't slow, it could be you're caught in the gravity of nearby planet and you're slingshotting... Try adjusting your approach angle.

It takes some practice, and what I've written may be complete bolox, but its kinda how things seem to work with me.

Also check out the newcomer forum, there some guides in there.

First off your supercruise problems, Lock target location in left screen and fly toward it in supercruise keep adjusting your speed as you need the left hand scan screen bottom bar, (Speed), to be in the blue area to safely drop out, when it tells you to safely disengage (Hold A and press up on d-pad). Next cargo issues, If its a mission picked up from the bulletin board then that's where you drop it off, If its cargo you bought then simply sell it in the commodities menu. A good rule for supercruise is to keep your speed lower than max as it can quickly get out of control and you will overshoot your destination. Also for docking, don't use the navigation tab, use the contacts tab to request clearance. If you feel that you have screwed your game then in the main options menu you can clear your save and start again, it won't matter too much in the very beginning.

Brilliant guys that's some fantastic information there, appreciate it. I think my issue is that I may still be in supercruise, as I had no option to ask for permission, in fact I couldn't contact any station what-so-ever.

I did go through the training missions twice so I'm pretty sure it's not the mechanics of my flying, more of a procedural issue I think.

Yes the cargo was from a mission on the bulletin board at Trevithick.

On the training mission the dock was a huge thing. within the game it is a mere dot on along the yellow axis ring of the star.

Again, thanks. I will have another crack today and keep this updated.

You need to be travelling at <1Mm/s and within 1Mm of your destination in SC. Get ready to do this. I /think/ it's "Y - down" for Engage Supercruise, but check that out first. You should press this when the blue text "Safe Disengage Ready" appears.

WAH! Big space station instead of little dot. You'll be within 10km of it. A mere 30-40 seconds travel and you're ready to dock... Great fun the first few times you do.

If you want to find a system, just enter the name in the search bar of your galaxy map (don't remember wich which tab though), it will automatically take your pointer there on the galaxy map and you will be able to do PLOT ROUTE immediately if you want to

All missions are turned in via the bulletin board. The mission detail on the Transaction tab will tell you where to turn it in.

Brilliant guys, managed to successfully dock in two stations, one of them rotating may I had, think I may have had an accident in my pants. My next issue is a artifact mission I'm on. I have travelled to Ross 142 to get an artifact, however after arriving and scanning the place is desolate, just a huge sun. I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for, or how to look for it.

Thanks alot for the prompt input up to now, really helps. Enjoying the game much more.

I was in the same boat as you last week, even though I did play the original many moons ago.
I got me a fuel scoop today and managed to fill up the ship wahay.
Now to find out how to use a cargo scoop.
I'm guessing if I blow a ship I could scoop the contents maybe.

Cargo scoops grab cargo that's free floating. Dropping the scoop will slow you down so you can grab the material. It's the same for mining but that's a whole other beast and best done with friends in Combat-specced ships. Simply line up the cargo(that you should have targeted in the first place) and guide the crosshair in the Targeting display (left of Sensors). If successful, the cargo will go to your hold.

just travel around the system and eventually sites will start to appear (actually you can just stay put to, they will start spawning close to you anyway after awhile), things called unknown signal source, or weak signal source and such.
for the retrieval mission you want to search the "weak signal sources"
lock on to them and travel to them the same way you do when you approach stations in super cruise when you are about to dock and disengage when you get the message.

Aha, thanks guys. I did have a weak signal source, I'm pretty sure I flew near it but then wasn't sure if I was in supercruise or not. I then may have pressed to go into supercruise and then I flew straight past it and it disappeared. I've now ran out of fuel and have no star docks near me, I guess it's time to blow myself up again as I have no fuel scoop.
