a few questions about limpets

I know how they work for the most part but have a few questions.

mostly wondering about recons, they collect data, but from where exactly?

and with collector limpets, can I just fire and forget assuming I 'm in range?. or do I need to target first, then fire for them to be effective?

and last, is it worth firing off hatchbreakers before I destroy a destroy a poor helpless transport ship? or will they drop the same amount of stuff after they blow up regardless?...

Not sure about Recon limpets. I've never heard of them.

Yes, in fact that's considered the best way to use collector limpets. If you target something they'll collect that one item and self destruct. Best way to ensure you have nothing collectible targeted, fire and forget, and hang around letting them suck up all the tasty cargo. They've got a pretty decent range but it's worth it to orient yourself so that everything you want to collect is 'below' you with your hatch facing that it is you want to collect. They work faster when you're pointed 'hatch down' at your salvage.

Absolutely. Blowing up transports actually destroys majority if not all of the cargo it's carrying. Hatchbreakers ensure all the cargo is vented in one piece instead of being consumed by the fireball.

When selecting a certain object (e.g. a material), a collector might only get this single item and disappear. Without selecting objects it will bring as many objects in range until it finally disappears. You can put materials on the ignore list if you don't want them to be collected (I never tried this).

Hatch breakers can bring you a larger amount of cargo I believe. I used them a lot in liberation missions, yielding dozens of cargo units. Never saw so many on exploding ships.

No worries. I got the rep.

Looks like Recon drones are the Data Link Scanner version of limpets and mainly used against Megaships. Instead of scanning a datapoint directly like you do with the SRV and ground data points you can fire a Recon drone instead and get the data. Sounds useful if you run up against "scan X datapoints in Y amount of time to gain data".

if that's the case that's great, the less time I spend in that srv the better lol.

No idea if it works against ground targets. The Wiki article I looked at explicitly referred to Megaships so it may not work against ground targets. Feel free to experiment but don't get upset if it doesn't work.

while I'm here I guess...

I ended up picking up a black box, rebel transmissions and some personal info or something like that.

I've seen them as mission objectives here and there (except for the rebel transmissions).... but finding them out in the wild, are they worth anything other than pirate bait?

Yep.

Depending on the Legality of the cargo if it's considered Stolen or Illegal (locking on the cargo in question will tell you if it's illegal salvage (stolen) or Legal Salvage (safe).

Stolen or Illegal Cargo needs to be sold at a Black Market and if you get scanned by System Authority carrying it, you will be fined.

Legal cargo will cause you no issues and you can carry it aboard without being troubled.

Black Boxes and Personal Info sound like something the Search and Rescue contact would be interested in. It's actually pretty valuable as far as cargo goes for the multithousand range. Not enough for the millions but if you've got the cargo space and the limpets, it's a decent leg up for ship operation fees.
