A few questions regarding Factions and Galaxy Map

Hi guys,

I am really enjoying my time exploring new stuff and just cruising around since I havn't played the game allot in Beta and Gamma.
But I am not really sure about a few things.
  • What impact does the population and the type of government has on a station/system?
  • When you gain reputation through completing missions, does this count towards your rank from the 3 major factions or are there smaller local factions?
  • Can you higher your rank with a faction through other than missions (Bounty Hunting/Trading/etc.)?
  • How far away from the system do you have to be to sell cartographic information?

Another question regards the galaxy map when I am looking at the trading routes. So far I get that the system the trading route is coming from contains a station or outpost that has a med-high supply of this good. And the other way around with the system the trade route goes in. Am I right with this assumption?

Again I am really enjoying the game so far but I think the factions don't have enough "impact". Ofcourse it is up to you how much Roleplay you wanna do and how much you wanna immerse yourself in the game but atleast a brief introduction of the factions at the beginning of the game would be great. So far I have no emotional connection (as stupid as that sounds, I know) with any of them. Which is a bit of a shame seeing how much I had with the factions in Freelancer. Although that is probably a bit of an unfair comparison given that Freelancer had a campain. A bit of introduction would be nice nontheless.

Thanks in advance and sorry for any grammatical mistake. German is my native language so my english is not the best. :)

The main impact of the population is that there's a much larger volume in the markets. If the population is only in the thousands, you can probably satisfy a station's demand for a good just by a few runs. If you're in a system with 17 Billion people, then the demands will be in the millions of tonnes, and your own trading will matter very little.
Large systems will also be generally be more developed with many different starports. In some cases these might have different economies, and they always have different markets.

If you want to raise your rank in a faction's navy, you'll have to do special naval rank ascension missions. I think the starting one is the one where you have to give them a good for free.

Thx that clarifies a few of my questions. Is it random where I can get the first mission for a faction? Do missions for stations that are affiliated with a faction raise your rank too or do they just help the station's faction?

/EDIT:
Just discovered this menu :D

Generally doing missions for the smaller factions increases rep with them AND with the larger faction that they belong to.
After completing a mission take a look at the status panel and you will see little blue up arrows next to the group/faction you have gained rep with.
You just have to look around for the missions for things like naval progression.

Just play the way you want and observe what happens with the tools provided, we are all still working out the how/what/why of it all!

It's 20ly to sell cartographics :)

Sold a few systems worth. So far have seen it range from 1000 to 4500cr depending on how much there is in the system....

Can't wait to stumble across my first black hole....
