A few questions & What I found (Tips for newbies appreciated)

Hi All,

I recently started playing Elite Dangerous and I've never played it before, I played EVE years ago for a while but I didn't stick with subscription based gaming. Anyway what a cool game this is, although for a new player it can be somewhat confusing!

Once I got the hang of flying, to begin with I would get stuck near to planets and didn't know about supercruising around them lol (what a noob), other new players; you can manually set a button for supercruise and hyperspace (or just use J) but it helps alot. Supercruise assist helps land on point (but only turn it on near the end of flight otherwise it takes longer).

So far I have managed to do some bounty hunting (after watching videos), some pirate missions, courier missions, then I kept accepting 'exploring the galaxy missions' for 100k reward in dromi/matet/sharur/noob areas. I managed to rack up about 15 of those same missions and when I left to explore sometimes the game paid me 200k at the same place (a glitch in the system?). Anyway this made me a few million with the bounty hunting i've been doing, I've purchased a new ship (I think it was the ASP explorer).

Questions:
1. I took a mission 'Access the hub terminal data link' or something like that, when I flew to the station it was under attack? I couldn't scan it or I didn't know how too. I read online that some missions are bugged or the wrong mission, and that you actually have to blow something up? So I went back and shot the hell out of the place and gained some fines!? so I abandoned the mission. What did I do wrong lol or was the mission bugged?

2. I accepted a few 'kill this pirate' missions, and two of them I was unable to find the pirates anywhere - I flew around the whole system and tried scanning but I couldn't find them, I think they were bugged so I abandoned them. I have completed a few of these missions though where it works fine/ any ideas - is this common?

3. Is the FSS included with the deep scanner? I opened it once with the " ' " button, do I somehow use it to scan planets to gain more money than deep scans?

Thanks In Advance
I'm such a noob on this
xD

I have exactly zero experience in the newb zone, so if anything of that is just plain wrong, sorry.

1) Those missions are usually for ground based installations, and I've never seen one of them under attack. If it's a space installation, then (in your case) two events happened simultaneously. First one was your mission, second one was the attack on the station, which happens more or less regularly. Station usually sends out a comms in this case which makes it possible for you to choose sides (attack or defend - or ignore) and consequently reap some rewards if your side wins. The scanning mission needs your datalink scanner (built into ships and SRVs). You'll need to assign it to a fire group to use it and then deploy hardpoints to actually make it useable (that's the step I usually forget...). The scanner has a range of a hundred meters or so, which makes it a bit problematic to use in larger ships - Viper is perfect, Mamba is borderline, Corvette is impossible.
2) You'll need to drop into the Nav Beacon (POI marker) and then scan the Nav Beacon (satellite). That should give you a mission update with the pirate's location. Or just wait at the beacon for a couple of minutes, and the pirate will jump in. In that case, though, they will also (attempt to) jump out when they've had enough of a beating, so kill them quick once they get some significant hull damage.
3) There's the FSS and the DSS - no idea what you mean by "deep scanner". The FSS is used to scan the whole system, the DSS is used to fire probes to map a planet. In case you are looking for outside tutorials and stumble across something called "(Advanced) Discovery Scanner" - forget it, that's the one that was replaced by the FSS a year or two ago.

Thanks for the reply, so I was using the Viper I think. I didn't realise you had to be a hundred meters to scan it, i had the scanners deployed but couldn't seem to use them. I also managed to use my viper as a passenger ship to complete a mission for 3 passengers gaining me a couple more mil to buy that ASP explorer, but im not flying it yet as I upgraded it loads and can't afford the insurance yet, lol. I'll have to try doing the access the hub missions again in 'real space' that im in now.

Scanning nav beacons - I fly near them but again haven't been able to use the scanners (except the deep scanner) - I thought that scanning might be automatic as other missions it gave me the location (maybe I waited near it long enough as you mentioned).

DSS= deep scanner? dunno lol, I do a deep scan and it finds orbital bodies. Then I can press a key to open FSS but i normally fly away as in supercruise when I do it. I'll play around with it more and watch some videos/

I think what you call "deep scanner" is the initial pulse of the FSS. Since you are flying in explored space, your system map would already be populated. Once you come into unexplored systems, you will have to enter the FSS screen and actually scan those planets before they turn up in the system map.

Thanks, I've managed to complete 2 of the hub missions just now! The problem was my 'Discovery' Scanner (not deep scanner lol) was the same firegroup as my other scanner, so I made one '1' and the other '2' and it scanned and worked.

Thanks for your help! Got me a nice 600k+ so I can now fly my other ship lol.

For newbs: Fly down to the station's.. when you get close you'll see another 'grey' target icon on the station, target that, scan it (hold down to scan). Ships will come to destroy you - I nearly died on both missions but I managed to escape!! :)
