1. How can you tell if a ship is player controlled or an NPC?

1. The icon on the scanner display is hollow for a CMDR, and filled for an NPC.
2. On the right hand side, there are three orange bars. The top one looks like a voice spectrograph. That's a quick visual indication of how much heat you're putting out. Immediately below it is a very thin yellow bar. That's your fuel reservoir for normal flight and supercruise. Below that is a thicker yellow bar. That one is for the main fuel tank for interstellar jumps.
