A file has failed to load after multiple attempts as direct3d cannot lock a buffer

I have not played Elite Dangerous in about 2 years. I installed the latest updated launcher and waited about 1.5 hours for ED to update. I went to launch ED and I get this error and crash. In addition, when I launch ED client, Steam VR automatically starts. I had 6 monitors as well as an HTC Vive connected to my PC. After doing some Googling, I found other people with multiple monitors claim that disconnecting the extra monitors worked for them. So I disconnected all but one of my monitors. I disconnected the Vive headset and I still have the same problem. I even uninstalled Steam VR to keep it from trying to launch when I start ED. I've restarted my PC, made sure my graphics driver is up to date, disabled all antivirus and malware... nothing has worked. I've never had this problem before. Any advice appreciated.'

Your PC is too powerful to play Elite Dangerous.
Please downgrade.

No seriously, try renaming your graphicswhatever.xml file. Maybe it's corrupted.

Do you maybe have TeamViewer or similar running? I know their
mirror drivers can cause trouble.

run afterburner https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner (its free)
downclock your gpu 50hz using the slider that should get you back up an running using your current gpu driver(latest)
or try installing a slightly older gpu driver from its archives(one you know you did not have an issue with)
last but not least ensure your gpu heatsinks and fans are clean(as dirty fans can cause a tdr issue too)
