A founders point of view. Three Days mining then from Startup to dead in 60 sec. This cant be right..

I am founder and from there on in I have dropped in and out of Elite dangerous over the years or as frustration dictates. My curiosity was raised earlier in the year with the announcement of odyssey and I decided I should start playing a bit more.
Other than the usual grind starting to bore me, getting killed two minutes entering a community goal system whilst trying to get to a station by another player, I thought I would try some mining that’s got to be a relatively peaceful and thought provoking past time. So kitted out for mining I have spent three session over three days mining not visiting a station because I want some entertainment not spending half my time looking at hyperspace (I played the original Elite and hyperspace lasted two seconds). Today I started Elite and straight away pirates appear start attacking me and I can’t jump away and end up dead. Now I can deal with these sorts of situations and do not mind the consequences it’s what the game is about. If you are in a combat zone you start far enough away from any adversaries to get prepared and your mind set is as such.. When your mining your mind set is not the same, just give me a minute or two to get orientated and organised what have I cargo have I got what are my resources how is the ship configured before confronting me with an all or nothing situation. All modern combat games have a lead in, you have to get to the area of confrontation etc... to hit me straight in like this within seconds well GIVE ME A CHANCE!

This left me feeling dejected not a feling of having had some entertainment. I have gone from relaxed and happy to my god this has no lead in. So instead of having half an hour’s entertainment I am on here pointing out how Elite Dangerous instantly left me with a bad feeling. Now I am going to go and do something else to try and lift my spirits back up.

Regards.

If it is not a rez site that you went mining at, the only time pirates show up is when you initially drop out of supercruise into the asteroid field. At that time some generic pirates will spawn and they will come over to scan you. If all you have in your cargo hold is limpets, they will throw some random insult at you and then toodle off to leave you in peace. If you log out and then back in again or get disconnected and then log back in again, the pirates will respawn, do the same thing and then toodle off IF you haven't already started mining. You might want to consider outfitting your ship with shields strong enough to allow you to escape. If possible, you might also want to upgrade to a ship that can both mine AND fight if need be.

Or just boost. Enemies dont boost to chase you only to turn for whatever reason so you can outrun them in almost anything.

So, for my info, and for the OP as well, what is the allowable distance to go from a RES entry point to not interact with the NPCs when you just want to mine?

It has been a number of years since I did this, but it used to be that the RES extended out to 25k or more, and if you were in that area, you still had the RES values without the NPCs.

There is a lead up... you need to look at the radar. You will see them before they can scan you. So just boost away from them.

Or, even better, find a High Security system with rings. Pirates seldom drop in on you, and if they do, you will have police help within 15 seconds of the first shot fired at you. Make sure you have enough shields to protect you for a couple of minutes while avoiding the pirates and allow the police to kill them.

It's a simple mechanic: Every time you enter the rocky rings to mine, pirates will come. That's the same whether you jump in and out or logoff and logon there. If you have cargo on board, the pirates will attack you and try to steal it.

If you have no cargo, all you have to do is wait until they're gone before you start mining. Bear in mind that they'll do a whole lap of the radar before leaving, which normally takes about 4 minutes. The worst case is when a pirate has a one-on-one battle with an NPC miner, which can go on for a very long time. Once they're gone, no more will come unless you have to logon again for any reason.

If for whatever reason you have cargo on board when you come in to the rocky rings, you can choose one of two strategies:
1. Fight the pirates. The pirates can be anything from a Single Adder to a wing of 4 tough ships. Only do that if you're confident you can win.
2. Run away. As soon as you arrive, put 4 pips to engines and 2 to shields and keep boosting for ages. The pirates will appear close to where you arrived, and if they can see you, they'll keep following you. Even after you've run them off the radar, they often reappear still chasing you, so, after they're gone, stop to make sure that they're not still coming before you start mining. If there's any doubt, keep an eye on your radar for the first few minutes of mining. If anybody appears on your radar, get ready to scoot.

Make sure that your ship has a good boost speed if you want to run away. Anything over 350m/s should be OK. Don't go mining in a slug unless you're sure that you can tank any attacks until you can get away. Point defence on the underside of your ship should keep the hatch-breakers off.

Personally, if I get logged off when mining, I always head for the market as soon as I log on. sometimes you need to be really quick because the pirates are straight on to you, so get yourself mentally ready for a sharp deprature from the rocks before logging on.

Just never go offline in mining zone. However, even if you do offline outside, then you will have to drop in. And pirates will come immediately again.
Generic rule is - never reenter mining spot with cargo on board.

Or. Be able to boost. They dont follow forever. A few 10s of KM and they are gone.

Dont reenter if you are piloting a snail.

If I'm staying in the belt on a multi session mining trip I try to climb out of the belt to lose mass lock so when I log in next time I can jump straight out if I get a pirate spawn.

Whilst you all offer good advice and thanks for that. From the perspective of games play, entering or leaving a system or rings mid game you have expectations and are probably ready to deal with things. But, to be put in that situation from loading the game without a moment to collect your thoughts is from a game play point of view very unforgiving. Being as I CANT quit the game whilst under attack or a period of time therafter, I should be offered a similar you won’t be attacked for some number of seconds when starting the game. Particulary when I felt I saved the game from what apperead to be a safe place I hadnt seen another ship for over a hour. It just seems like a reasonable expectation and one that can help avoid frustration. I am all for improvements that make playing enjoyable.

The other day I dropped in on a ring. There was another player there. Some NPCs dropped in with me. The other player saw me and came over to say hi and ask if I was friendly.

I was straight-up with him and told him that normally I'd be scanning him and doing my pirate thing, but since there was an NPC fer-de-lance bearing down on our position and he was full of platinum, he should get out of the ring now.

He didn't make it.

You could always go further out into the black to do your mining.
That way you won't see any npc ships.
I can appriciate this idea, but rather than avoiding the probem I belive in making the experience of game play better for everyone. So going futher out is a choice. After all space is REALLY BIG if I pop into existence (load the game) how could these pirates know I was there so quickly it breaks the illusion or emersion.

Edit.
I think for me this is it I dont want to feel like I am avoiding programming quirks I dont want the illusion broken. If I lost it all making my way back or ten minutes later the experience would have been differnet one I would have been settled, comfortable my thinking would have been "I'm in a vunrable situation" and then the entertainment begins in deaing with the risk. I basically had the oppotunity to enjoy that taken from me before I could react. Thers no chance for the story to build back up to where I left it so I can emerse myself in it and make some choices good or bad.

I know this is little consolation after the fact OP, but I was told something when I was new to the game that I've kept as it has always served true.

The only place in the game that is safe to log off at, is a station of some sort. Otherwise when you log in, you have to be expecting to get attacked.

Sorry you lost your stuff though mate, I feel for you.

My laser mining ships(Python, Clipper) drop in, kill pirates, then mine in peace.
I was tired of evasive tactics(losing play time), so I just made builds which take care of pirates first.
Basically on Python I mounted OC frags and LR beam in L slots, on Clipper also large OC frags.
Also, I don't mine in HazRes,so I don't encounter hard-to-kill pirate npc's.
