A fresh start

Hello there.

I was actually thinking about to delete my current character and start all over again. The recent and upcoming changes and additions to the game are quite intriguing yet have little point if you are allready sitting in an anaconda or something similar.

I just fear that the cosmetics I bought so far will be deleted as well. Is that in fact the case or will paintjobs, decals, clothes ect. be carried over to a new character if I choose to create one?

You keep all your cosmetics. That is for your account, not the commander.

There is no point in deleting your save. The only reason to restart for real would be if they implemented a new game mode "open only".

Good call CMDR. I started over a few months ago when I got VR. I hit "Clear save" and in 1 second wiped my 2 year build-up to 1bil Cr balance, G5 ENG Vette, Conda, Python etc. Best decision I've made in Elite.

Yeah they transfer over. Black Friday, Gold paint jobs, access to Cobra Mk IV (if applicable) et al

Do not do it. Buy a second account instead. I wiped my save half a year ago and every now and then I have regretted doing it. Do not clear your save.

You will keep the cosmetics on your account despite of clearing the save.

Done it at least two dozen times since launch — last time was 4-5 months ago.

It can be fun to experience the early game stuff after every big patch, especially the early planning of credits and 'resource (material) management' to get the most out of what you got.
...But you will quickly reach a point where you are past the point where credits matter.

Whether or not you will regret it is highly dependent on several individual factors. The things I find most annoying when I've done it are:
- Navy ranks
- Higher tier Engineer unlock requirements (not the actual material gathering / upgrading process, but stuff like "mine 500 ore" when I absolutely despise mining)

To be clear, if he gets a new second account that one will have no cosmetics from the first.

Its honestly not THAT big of a deal.

I restarted on PC after 2 years on xbox (left my xbox cmdr intact). About a month ago i hit the 300 hr mark.

300 hrs......and i own every ship in the game, have 4 billion in cash, have BOTH Naval grinds completed, access to shinrarta dezhra, and every engineer (except lori jamison) unlocked and to level 5 (and half of my ships are fully engineered).

Point is..... once you know what you're doing, things move much faster in Elite dangerous

Just buy a second account. This way you can still keep all your stuff and have the experience of starting over with the added benefit of being able to switch between both. I picked up a second off the Frontier Store last night for 75% off.

The downside is that you won't have access to the paints etc from your main account. Really is a dumb way to set up a game. You should be able to link accounts or better yet be able to purchase a second CMDR slot from a single account but it is what it is I suppose.

I erased saves a few times.

So I'm biased, but I have never truly regretted it. At moments, I regretted the loss of naval ranks which are a pain to get back - but that's the only thing that really hurt.

You'd find that engineers progression is pretty natural when starting from scratch. Credits rise fast.
Obviously, there are more goals to reach, and you can do so in a more careful, experienced approach.

Well, I wouldn't advise you against buying a second account : I prefer having a single "meaningful" avatar but on the pros part, you can "roleplay" more a character, because you still have another CMDR for doing all the nonsense you fancy. On the cons, you might be forced to do without cosmetics, which is [knocked out] - except if you have money to spare on rebuying them.

I am thinking about the same thing. Was curious what the OP decided to do. Did you restart or go with a second account? If you did restart, have you ever had cause to regret it?

I have been thinking of doing challenges for myself. Like mining only (no missions, even mining mission), Strictly trade runs (again, no missions, CGs included), etc.

Whyyyyyy?

WHY do people feel the compulsion to completely undo all their work and effort and start from scratch?

Why not simply buy a stock sidewinder and force yourself to keep track of your available resources in your own self-imposed iron man mode, if you so choose?

Must you undo everything you've put into the galaxy we all share as players?

*sigh* I really, really will never understand the masochistic tendencies that seem to permeate the community of Elite Dangerous.

I am sure everyone has their own reasons. Why am I thinking about it? I currently own 3 Anacondas (one for combat, one for trading, one for exploring), 2 Type-9s (one for trade, one for mining), a Beluga, and a slew of other ships. And I am still sitting at over 1 Billion credits. I like challenges (except PvP, if I wanted that I would have stayed with Eve), and restarting to me is a good way of doing just that. The "Forcing Myself" idea would be all well and good, but I have unlocked engineers, ranked up in Fed and Empire, am Elite in Trade and Ranger in Exploring. So in order to truly challenge myself, a hard reset would be so much better. I play on PC, so the whole "Create a new gametag" road is not possible. I do not see the reason of buying a second account.

Everyone wants to play the game their way, for some of us that is occasionally just hitting a reset button and starting from scratch. To go "last time I did ABC. This time I will not do A, B, or C, I want to try it doing xyz."

Does that help you see the "Why"? Like I said, some of us. The vast majority of people would never consider it. Easier to just buy a second account or "force yourself", but their is a small group of people that feel giving it all up and starting fresh is just easier. Do they regret it? That is a question I want to know. Would I? Maybe every once in a while, but then it would refocus me, get me working harder to build back up to that level.

The DSM does. :)

Pause for a moment and fully appreciate the considerable amount of time you have invested in to your current cmdr.

I didn't reset but I did go the second account route and I'm so glad I didn't choose the reset option.

I do enjoy exploration (among other game styles), but often had to turn around and head back to the bubble when I had the uncontrollable itch to shoot something, haul something or buy and engineer something. So my second account scratches the itch so to speak.

Using your 'trade runs' idea - it is not until you start over, that you appreciate just how very long that haul is to your A rated FSD module (with G5 for good measure), just so that you can get your T9 to its destination system without having to take 3 detours, or prevent you from running a very lucrative trade loop you just discovered, because you can't make one of the jumps whilst fully laden.

When you are sitting in your hanger full of top end ships and a billion credits, in an Elite locked station that can supply every ship, module and gadget you desire, it's easy to forget the significant time invested in chasing around the galaxy to find a D rated this and an A rated that, or getting from zero to Elite.

I'm not unhappy with my choice, but I'm so very glad I didn't undo the hours/weeks/months invested in my first cmdr with a split second press of the 'reset' button.

There SURELY has to be a better way to challenge yourself than metaphorically punching yourself in the nuts and chopping yourself off at the knees.

Why not go with the challenge of manually keeping track of your Engineers/Empire/Fed/Pilot Federation rankings? lol

i think you might be missing the point. If the current commander is 'released from service',he doesn't neccessarily disappear from the universe, indeed he will bestow his hours of experience to the new commander as a legacy before disappearing into the black.I should not be surprised if most of us (especially in the early days of the account) have availed ourselves of the 'new commander' mechanic without any appreciable detriment to the universe.

Eloquently Put Commander. I could not have said it better myself.
