A gentleman of the Empire (and how I was undone by my own side)

Good day, commanders.

Sometimes something happens that's enough to put a smile on your face and I've just had such an encounter. There's so much vitriol and discontent floating around at the moment I thought I'd share a brief but more positive story :D

Having recently returned from a sightseeing trip to the core I decided to be a good Federal pilot and pledge to Herr Hudson. Team mates have helped explain exactly what I should be trying to do so after a few runs back and forth to take garrison supplies I then entered the fray in a system that we're fighting for control over with Old Hag Torval. I'm not much of a PVPer but try not to shy away from fighting so when a player appears on my radar I dutifully swung around to identify them.

An Imperial, deadly rank, in a Clipper. Commander Darrax. (Hope it's okay to name as it's a thoroughly positive encounter)

He fired the first shot and I lazily heaved my ship around to bring my guns to bear, at which point I realised I had some problems.

You see, yesterday my laptop (my main platform to play ED on) died. I've set up my PC and updated Elite but the last time I played on here I was using my X52. "I'll deploy chaff," I thought to myself. ...but the keybinding is missing. I kept fighting and took the Clipper's shields offline but my own were faltering, "I'll deploy a SCB," I thought to myself. ...but that keybinding was missing as well.

Darrax was clearly of the same fight-or-die mentality as me and we continued fighting, our hulls becoming increasingly battered.

I then suddenly realised that my ship had stopped responding to all pitch, roll and fire commands. My PC's mouse batteries had died, protesting at having not been used for ages.

"I yield." I typed, "But you can kill me."

The firing stopped, so I carried on typing. "My mouse has died." I explained. To paraphrase, I went on to say "I don't mind you killing me, you won the fight."

Darrax asked me to stay behind him so he did not shoot me - I believe that means he had turrets and, with my hull at 1%, he did not want to accidentally kill me after being a gentleman.

Federal forces jumped in to the instance and I believe Darrax began to engage them, as they began protesting. "I'll log off to fix my mouse but out of respect for your win I'll leave the system for a few hours" I said.

Suddenly, "Ship scan detected." followed by "You've committed a crime!" (I had garnered a bounty by virtue of trying to prevent the Old Hag's ships doing their work).

One shot later, with my shields about 70% ready to come back online, I'm facing the insurance screen and a six million credit buyback.

So thank you very much to Cmdr Darrax, I don't know if you're on the forum but you behaved like a true gentleman and thank you very much to the Federal security forces that killed me when I was working on behalf of the Federation :D

EDIT: PS: If Cmdr Darrax isn't on the forum but someone knows him, please send him my thanks :D

I've spoken to the mods recently on the topic of naming, and they seem ok with it as long as you get the permission of the person you are talking about. So, i'd edit that out and try and contact the person involved and ask them for their permission.

I have found a user on the forum with the same name so I have PMed him. I will remove his name later if I have not had a reply. It does seem a bit backward that you're not allowed to praise someone by name but if that's the case I will stick to the rules.

Liqua: That is kind of what I felt... I understand that enemy factions would want to engage me for the killing of their ships but getting shot by Federal ships for carrying out Federation work is a bit like military police shooting soldiers for engaging with the enemy.

Scudmungus: Unfortunately I'm having to run a 10m HDMI cable across the room to be able to use my PC on the dining table (thankfully my wife is being understanding) so wireless peripherals are my only option :D Otherwise normally yes I'd use a wired mouse at least :D

The worst thing about this incident is that because I'm not used to playing on my PC I forgot that Shadowplay would have recorded the whole thing. By the time I realised, it was too late.

so its against the rules to thank or praise a CMDR for helping you?

anyone care to explain the logic there?

Not saying it is... its probably a grey area. The rule is "no naming and shaming" - which is generally taken to mean both in conjunction. I've not seen any mods giving warnings for naming and praising... but it never hurts to be sure.

And besides, the person who is being praised may not want their name mentioning... it might seem strange, but people can be a little strange at times. c.f.: the internet.

Great experience CMDR. Thanks for sharing.

Sums up everything there is about the Federation, blowing you up even though you were on their side and doing your duty, and at 1% too. Now that you've seen their true colours, know that there's always room and rank in the Empire for pilots with honour. Come over and bask when you have the chance.

Ha yeah i never thought that they might want to remain in the shadows.

Great post by OP though..kinda shows the bad and the good of Elite Dangerous. The good - honourable combat. immersion gameplay getting caught up in fighting for your faction in PP (Federation)

the bad....

The ridiculous logic of Federation security (who the OP is fighting for) to kill him without a so much as a by your leave. You can imagine a situation where a federation ship single handedly fights off an Empire incursion but accidentally grazes a Fed security ship (but doesnt kill it) he is executed by his own forces....on the spot....

Thats messed up FD... :( Maybe to encourage players to engage more in PP its an idea maybe to not have your own forces be so quick to turn on their allies.

Well, I for instance hate it when someone damages my bad reputation that I work so hard on, just by telling everyone how much a gentleman I was! That's how I'd justify the necessity of permission.

Great story! Rip laptop.
