Read First A list of common arguments.

This is just to avoid these threads coming up over and over and over again....
Feel free to add your own.

PvP vs Griefing

Should Elite be about more than spaceships? (Or the FPS discussion)

Newtonian vs Non-Newtonian Physics

This thread ISN'T to further those arguments just to give a handy thread to point to when they come up... again. They do seem to take over a lot of threads.

PS I am in no way intending to trivialise people's opinions on these discussions.

Sorry to be the one to state the bleeding obvious, but if a thread is rehashing an old discussion, simply let a moderator know and they will take appropriate action (if any is required). That's what they do.

You're stating the bleeding obvious... ;)

I think Jeff's idea has some merit since people do seem to keep asking questions on all sorts of topics that have been done to death hundreds of times...

Maybe there's some way of shoving a prompt in when people create a new post to remind the user to search in case a post already exists (T.j. will love me for that!) :D

That is what motivated this... I'd prefer it if Liqua's answer was the way to go, but it some of the arguments come up again again and again. I hope this IS stickied so that there's an easy way to limit these discussion to the threads where they've already come up.

PM a mod then to create a topic thread and sticky it .. might help when they want to merge threads.

We have asked people to do a search and to look through pages before creating new threads but this does not always happen.

I had to merge a thread once that had the same topic duplicated on the same page 4 threads down.

For the present I would recommend doing exactly what Alien said. This very topic is one of the things the mod team has been discussing.

I think it's a useful idea to point people towards the threadnaughts that have occurred on common topics. Sometimes the topic title doesn't make it obvious what it's about.

But as we know some people will just wade straight in with a new thread regardless...

Problem is that *all* those subjects are done for...decisions were made long time ago, and in nutshell sticking them to the top will just signal to people that it is up for discussion - again. Which they're not.

So just merge or close when new threads arrive would be my suggestion.

Correct. :)

We were talking about an index like some of the stickies have. For example the one that has a list of the thread of all the authors etc.

For what it's worth, I tend to assume the majority of people asking repetitive questions have just got to that point where they need to express themselves. We've all been there - you're two pages into a long thread, you know the exact words you want to write and you're just skip-reading posts on your way to the "reply" box. Although this thread won't help those people, it could help those that really just don't have much google-fu, and might also be a handy resource for those of us playing the role of signposts.

Having said that, my vote's still for resurrecting the tagging system instead of disabling it. Twitter uses nothing but tags, and they seem to be doing alright.

Would it help to add a link (where appropriate) to the Design Archive dealing with some of the points where they have been disucssed to death and at this stage they 'ain't gonna change?

Bless yer little cotton socks. :D

As Styggron said though the search button is your bet bet.

We do try to merge threads tha cover the same subject, but it's easy to miss them, but send us a PM and we'll look at them. :D

And just as the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation described their products with GPP, the search function " Your plastic pal who's fun to be with!" :D

I think it's because we have an influx of new forum users, excited about the game and full of innocent questions? Bound to happen, and it'll happen many times again as the game goes through the various stages of release. If we're weary of repetition now, lord help us come release :)

Now you mention it, new people's questions are all a little bit different. For example, there's an amazing array of requests where the answer involves some unique mix of groups, offline mode, ironman and one other random DDF proposal (a different one every time).

If we ever get to the point where most questions can be answered with a simple template, the most useful thing the mods could do would be to make a thread full of template responses. I'd be happy to write a Greasemonkey script to grab templates from that thread and paste them into a reply box.
