Are you sure your CMDR hasnt acidentaly punched the keypad after a good nights out drinking & forgot the Ships startup codes & then replaced it with a close by spare i.e. borrowed it from the ship on the next pad

There's always been a bit of cross-licensing of keyboards. The original Cobra Mk III had a keyboard made by the now long defunct Acorn corporation.
One of its unique features was the BREAK key which, when pressed, would "break" the ship by dumping all of its flight control software out of RAM and resetting to factory defaults. Accidental breaking of the ship was a common complaint among early owner-operators.
