A Little Help....

Hello Chaps and the Ladies of Elite. I need some help or advice if you all don't mind.

I've been mainly trading over the last few months and have quiet enjoyed upgrading my ships; finding good trade routes etc.

But now with the end of Beta I am going to sell up my Asp and get a Cobra to have a go at some fighting.

What I need to know is what is a good set up for a Cobra as I don't have a clue when it comes to weapons as I've been fly around with none for months.

I have sold off my Asp and have around 14million to play with

What loadouts would you pick for my Cobra? :S

I have gone back to the core worlds and am parked around Styx

Cant go too wrong with 2 beam/pulse lasers to bring down shields, and a couple of multi cannons to hammer the hull. New power supply helps too.

The viper and cobra are similar enough that nearly identical loadouts work. The trick with the cobra is to use gimballed weapons on the lower hardpoints as they are a little far apart and if those aren't gimballed you will never hit anything.

Obviously you want your power plant, shields and power distributor as high as you can get and I would pack some shield cells too. I have been told that better sensors help giballed weapons track better but I have not tested this.

The cobra is slower than the viper so if you want pure combat I would go for the viper instead. The cobra is a better choice if you expect to be carrying cargo though.

I agree with this. With the higher costs of projectile ammo now, I also use lasers to bring down the shields first (works good), and then lasers + multicannons to finish the opponent's ship off.
 
Cobra (180 tons) is agile corvette, able to catch any trader and "convince" it to drop cargo. It's not a fighter. Any Viper (60 tons) will out-turn you until you master FA-off. You will have to run away from many duels with them.

But, laser turrets are awesome in Beta 3. And Cobra can keep them firing. It's side weapon mounts are unusable for any forward fire guns, but excellent for turrets. Ofc, it's just temporary situation, but use it until chaff gets fixed. Many Viper pilots are using light shields, as good ones weight 8 tons or cost half a million.

And to middle mounts I'd put fragment cannons. I'd kill big ships easier and make nice surprises to small ones. And it's funny to use them. In case small ones are with better pilots - ruuuuun! Weapons can't save you from them, no matter of choice.
