A little unfriendly in Altair ?

I'm a long time player of the Elite series, all the way back to the very first iteration, through Frontier and First Encounters. Loved 'em, bugs and all.
So far ( and I've been playing ED since it was first released ) I love almost everything about it ... except one thing. I was looking forward to
The 'Wings' update, since it made flying as a group real and practical. Unfortunately, the phrase 'space is not a friendly place' is VERY apt when it
comes to RL players as well as the AI. Trying to strike up a conversation is like pulling teeth, and god forbid I ask if anyone wants to wing. It's
a little disillusioning to find a community, and yet not. I'm currently based in Altair ( close to convenient high-tech stations and .. other things ) and
so far I've been barely able to get a 'grunt' out of a live player. I don't treat others that way and I don't enjoy being brushed off like a gnat. So
Overall, the game is great, most of the RL players though, aren't. Maybe I should just stick to Solo. Or, are their any players in that region who
are actually friendly ? I'd sure like to meet you.

Two things. Your home base may not be home to many "friendly" players so you may want to venture elsewhere some would say around starter systems.

Other thing if your bad luck persist you may want to look for groups that share common interest and that will accept wing invitations or chat more easily. I'm thinking Mobius for great PVE (inter)action here but also more Federation centric groups from the looks of your signature.

To be honest the most player interaction (and the most intelligent conversations) that I have had has been exploring. I don't know why but the crowd that travel 50,000LY avoiding people seem awfully nice and chatty when you do meet them. (to the point of dropping out of supercruise for a closeup photo :D).

Maybe its because their profession isn't as money based so they care less about time, Altair is a rare trade stop so many people will be "grinding" credits and won't want to stop for tea and chat...

Edit: It could also be that they know anyone meeting them isn't there to kill them since ~90% of explorers don't carry weapons.

I've met several talkative and friendly CMDRs. I think moving to a new system might be a good idea. You can add me.

Your home base is a rare trade hub, and most rare traders are very antisocial. Try the ongoing community goals, especially trade goals such as the one in WOLF 406, or the Peraesii area.

I have a similar problem. I can't find populated space. Rare do I find more than one or two people to a system. It's become quite... dull, to say the least.

Come to Alliance space, usually a fairly chatty place. Joined a random wing for trade protection this afternoon, much fun and made new friends so all good. Some people aren't chatty because English isn't their first language, or possibly a language they don't speak at all.

I'm usually around the Altair area every day.

Feel free to strike up a chat... I cant wing up though..... those rares wont deliver themselves

Varies from place to place... I've met the most CMDRs in the wild through community goals. All it usually takes is broadcasting on local comms while docked to start up a conversation, even if it's a simple "What's up <Insert Station Name.>" If they respond, ask them how the galaxy's treating them, what they are doing and if they'd like a wingman. Some people will sign up, others won't. If they don't wanna chat, don't force it and move on. When on long supercruises I like to spout off movie quotes. Nobody's killed me for that, so far.

"This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express and I'm talkin' to whoever's listening out there..."

On an semi-off topic. Does anyone know which Empire systems have a high player population?

I'm not familiar with Empire space since it's like the basement of the Elite universe, I reckon I'll head on down there and see what kind of space dust has collected.

The Altair system is probably not the best place to hang out for conversation... most rare goods traders are busy rushing from system to system trying to make credits as quickly as possible.
Most of the players I've run into in my travels have been at least obliquely friendly and willing to chat a few lines before running off.
But lets get to the game changer... a little over a month ago I was recruited by a CMDR looking to organize a small group of players to work toward common goals. Since then the entire game has changed for me. I now have a group of friends in the game. I popped in to play for a few minutes last night and was almost immediately in a wing with people I've grown to know.
My suggestion is: Find a group. There are plenty out there... Adel's Armada, Dark Echo, Earth Defense Force... those are just some of the Federation groups.

Im around altair. Did a trade wing in nearby systems the other day. Peaceful with a nice chat but yes most of time comms are silent.

Even tried to interdict a couple of people last night to pirate just for some interaction.

First submitted with no cargo. Second did a runner I should have just took his shields as soon as he started to run. But I was too slow cargo scanning him.

Im not interested in killing commanders but hey if I choose to pirate I might have to get meaner for runners.

But hey anyone want to wing for trade or bh great

Commander the same name.

Until the other day I hung around a little travel RES in Federation space. Whenever a fellow CMDR jumped in or was already there I would send out a greeting - something like "Morning CMDR, how's the hunting?". Upon receiving a reply I often continue with the likes of "Is this your normal stomping ground?" or apologising for getting the kill shot on an Anaconda if there is another CMDR within range. It was rare when I encountered another player but recently I have moved away from Federation space and put up sticks amongst the Alliance. Since then I have encountered twice as many pilots in a day than in the past five months of casual playtime...

Might even strike a conversation up with one or two of them...

Agreed, find a group or if you want I'm currently trade grinding a 1 hop route between Gliese 868 and Ra, your more than welcome to join me, I have a few other commanders there I wing up with if there online ign: 0btuse

The last time someone tried to talk to me in passing, it was such a surprise that they'd jumped into hyperspace before I'd managed to remember what I'd bound the "activate comms" key to. I used to have it bound to something logical and accessible, then pressed it by mistake while trying to dock and had bounced off two walls while broadcasting nonsense to the - thankfully empty - local channel before realising why none of the flight keys were working.
