Horizons A lot of Crashes to desktop., just me or common?

Hi folks,

I am experiencing a sudden increase in Crashes to desktop with the crash reporter askingme to say what I was doing.

Mostly, just flying in Supercruise near a sun (either arriving or departing). No hardware changes this end to account for the sudden increase in CTD occurrences.

Anyone else?

I've not submitted a ticket as they are automatically collecting the crash reports.

Is this issue common in this release?

Having just spent around 20 hours mostly flying around a couple hundred suns in supercruise, I'd say no. The game only crashed after I'd landed.

Maybe check if your graphics drivers recently got "upgraded". (Quotes because sometimes automatic upgrades seem to be going the wrong way.)

It's also possible that you're having a bad time with your regional server instances, the game has rather more traffic at the moment.

In the last 2 months I think it's crashed once on me, on a planet. I play every day. It's a pretty stable game as far as my experience goes.

Not really, I thinnk I had one crash in 2.1 and it was caused by bad GC drivers. (never install nVidia drivers the first day they come out)

If you're crashing regularly, I'd suspect HDD or RAM. If you have W10, 64bit Horizons and only 4GB RAM, it can cause issues (for some reason, even if the RAM is technically more than enough)
HDD could also be at fault, if it's older, slower model. When you are approaching a planet, it's a huge amount of resources that need to be loaded at once.

To see it this might be the case, try lowering your resolution and pull the Terrain work slider to minimum. That will restrict the amount of preloaded resources.
If it doesn't help, it's probably that mysterious "something else". :D

I seem to have more crashes since the last update. Even more when running 2 CMDR's simultaneous. I've no stats collected, but make sure I press the "Send" button when it is present. Sometimes, I don't even get the "Send" button, but just a hard crash.

FD should have the numbers from CMDR's, so if it's a game related (bug), then they should be able to fix it (soon).

I've had precisely one crash in approximately 600 hours that wasn't caused by my own hardware.

That once was in this update, but I've never had one since.

I did have a couple of CTDs over the last month or so. But those were caused by a known issue, due to selling lots of exploration data. I've not noticed any additional crashes recently.

As others have said, check any new gfx drivers. Nvidia especially have a nasty habit of changing your settings with every driver update. The last one I did decided my gpu would perform best in adaptive power mode!?! Yeah, buy a high end graphics card and stick it in power saving mode.. well done nvidia!

I'd suspect it's either an automatic driver update for something like the GPU, or a hardware-based fault causing it to crash, as that sort of thing won't be common or this forum would be in meltdown by now!

It's more than likely to be memory, graphics card or another component causing a timing problems ultimately leading to a crash.

Whilst diagnosing the above isn't easy, you could also uninstall the game from the launcher and reinstall it, just in case something somewhere is corrupt. And checking for the latest GPU driver. But my gut instinct is hardware...

Id say hardware as well..
at this time of year my PC room gets to 30degC regularly. Cooling can be an issue.
Even with the case open and abig fan blowing at the insides.
So I regularly check/clean all heatsink vanes with a blast of air and check connections
by unplugging/replugging connectors ..re-seating graphics card and RAM also helps.
Connections can become unstable through heat exposure.
Turn off power to the mobo at the back of PC/ or mains before doing anything inside tho....
no need to unplug from mains as the earth connection also serves to earth the PC against static.
Heat can be the source of most hard crashes/lockups.

Maybe it could also be a good idea to roll back the graphic driver a version or two.
Just to be sure.

It will not have any influence on the performance.

Please see my rant about server problem. Not a CDT. All my games play fine. Just not Elite dangerous. In my post I said (Cannot connect to server.) Can't be a steam issue. And the launcher says the server is okay. But it isn't!

I rarely have a ctd in ED but I have had the game freeze up on me a few times. Not to worry you but the last time I had a similar problem it was because one of my memory cards was faulty. Gave a memory address error for another game's crash report but didn't affect any other games I played. Replacing stopped it.

Ugh. Mine started crashing on exit after I updated the driver and it installed the nvidia experience. I had to revert the driver and remove the nvidia experience to fix it. Other than that, I've had a handful of crashes in 600 hours. Pretty stable.
