A machine fit for Elite at last

Some time ago I started this thread https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34902&highlight= because I was disappointed that my old clockwork computer was not going to fit the specs of the game and so, thanks to very kind words of support - surprising after a whine - I decided to 'stealth build' a machine, one part at a time until I had one made.

And it's made!

I5 320 (1155 mobo)
4gb Ram
GTX 650 (used, so as to be in budget)
well, that's the important parts.

The only downer is that I won't be able to buy the game before the 22nd as I don't get paid until the 27th. Sigh.

Still! Huzzah, etc. Have a glass of wine, nibbles in the corner, etc.

What setting levels would I be getting out of that?

I will wait till the 16th dec to be honest.

It looks about just over minimum specs.

I would say at least a solid 30fps.

I had a GTX 650 before I upgraded my card 3-4 weeks ago. It will run Elite fine, you might get 15-20fps in stations but everywhere else it'll be fine.

Yeah, the graphics card does let it down a bit, infact I think it could be under the minimum. I think a 660 is minimum. Everything else is fine.

Congratulations on your new computer. I too decided it was time to upgrade and build a monster:

Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-5930K (3.5GHz) 15MB Cache
ASUS® X99-S
16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X PREDATOR QUAD-DDR4 3000MHz X.M.P (4 x 4GB)
4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 970

*clink* cheers, may your fun with Elite Dangerous be for many years. I can't wait to get my filthy hands on the occulus rift for it. ;)

Shok.

Actually it all depends on the monitor setup you have, ED is not as demanding as many modern games, your GPU will only get overloaded if you are running in FHD or higher, I was running It fine on my R6970 in FHD 1200x1920 the GTX650 must be similar spec, but later I bought a R7970 which is said to be about 30 better%, needless to say I was getting fixed 60FPS in all scenarios, It flet like my GPU was idling as my GPU temps hardley ever passed 45C (my CPU and GPU are water cooled with a single 360 radiator) but heres the thign though, last month I buy a LG ultrawide 34" to enjoy better views of the game, running at 1440 x 3440 the temps started reaching the 60s and even 70s, so a higher res really stresses the GPU more than any thing else.

So how your rig will perform is all down to the screen settings and of course details (i always keep every thing to max, its disrespect to the developers not to!)

The requirements of this game are pretty low now and should get lower still if the team understands the optimizing process.

I should have mentioned it's a 1gb graphics card, not the 512 version, I think that makes a difference. Does E : D support SLI? I may as well ask, since I'm here.

I was just reading this and have to say:

That I'm running my 4 year old machine with a 12gb ram with a GeForce gtx 460 1gb with a 3.2ghz cpu an all my settings are to high and super, the ones that have. With a constant 35 to 43 fps in any place of the galaxy. Track iIR and a 24 Samsung monitor. I'm not making this up and I'm not saying this to portrait as better. Just wondering.

Just lucky I think

Here's my rig. No worries at highest settings. Currently have Crossfire off, as there seemed to be some issues with it a few updates ago. Have yet to turn it back on and see if they are resolved.

I want an X-55 Rhino to go along with it.

BTW, playing on a 26-inch Best Buy branded LCD TV. No worries there, either.

Edit: Looking to uprade with this...

and maybe two of these...

you should run ED fine.
I'm in HD 1920x1080 with everything up full, smooth as silk.
Using my 'old' gaming PC as opposed to the new one due to the joystick/seat setup...
AMD Phenom 810 o/c @ 3.2Ghz (this CPU is 5 years+ old)
8GB RAM
NVidia GTX 590 (Dual GPU/SLi)
128GB SSD for game files, 256GD SSD OS drive, 1TB drive for data 10,000rpm

its rock solid in modern games still. Mainly because i use a single 46" HD screen and the GPU is grunty.

Your setup should be fine and above the 30fps estimated above. I would think it may be prudent to buy 4GB more RAM for general usability reasons though.

SLi is working fine with the alternate frame render method 2 set, and using the NVidia ED profile.

I'm running it with a Geforce GTX 560 Ti. runs great. Most things on High or Ultra (except shadows). I've also started playing it with the Nvidia DSR trick. With the new Nvidia drivers you can adjust the screen resolution to more than your monitor then the drivers downconverts the picture to fit your monitor. I'm playing Elite with a 2103x1183 resolution in the in game resolution settings (these resolutions open up after you've enabled the DSR option in the nvidia settings). And there IS a difference in the picture quality, looks really great! Try it out. I can't crank up the resolution to 4k for example because my 560 TI would have an heart attack lol.
Here's a youtube clip explaining the DSR option in the Nvidia geforce driver.

I feel like a bit of a braggart posting here, but for the sake of completeness, I preface by saying I'm a 3D animator for a living who does a lot of smoke and flame simulation, so I need a fair amount of computer. This is my home freelancing rig; you should see the brutes they've got in the studios I've worked at...

To start with, I'm running a Samsung U28D590D. 28" 4K panel.
i7-4930K at 3.4GHz
32GB RAM
nVidia TITAN Black - evga Overclocked version, 6GB RAM

I still get some stutters, even with this $1200 monster of a GPU. But most of the time... oh, pinch me. I'm dreaming I'm aboard my very own Cobra Mk III. I swear, I can smell the spilled coffee in the floor mats... :D

I've just finished building my PC
Asus M5A99Fx Pro R 2.0 motherboard
AMD A10-7700K Kaveri 10 Compute Cores (4 CPU + 6 GPU) 3.5GHz Socket FM2+ 95W Desktop Processor AMD Radeon R7 series
Nvidia GTX 760 Geforce Graphics card.
16GB ram
And a couple of hold hard drives.

I'm excited :)

Just started my own (completely unnecessary) upgrade.

Popped in a spanky MSI GTX970OC, a CM 650w modular PSU and a Fractal Designs R4 case (sooo quiet).. Upgrades a GTX580 3GB, Corsair CM700 PSU and Antec 1200 case.

Next up.. New CPU and Mobo

Then... 2x 2TB HDDs, and 1x 512MB SSD

I am running with a GTX 550 Ti on a I7-870 with 12 GB RAM and it works just fine (with the occasional stutter and going down to 20 fps near planets).

A question about track ir, if I may. When you look up in your cockpit, can you still actaully see the monitor, or do you have to squint?

That is a common concern about the Track IR, the answer is, you don't move your head that much.

Its small movements, and it throttles as your head gets closer to the edge of the turn. Ie the more right your head turns, the faster the rotation on the screen..

Im making this worse.... the answer is NO you don't need to squint. It is comfortable and you can see the screen easy.
